If youre remodeling your basement, then you probably have a number of questions. Answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about basement finishing projects are below. Hopefully this article provides the answers you need.

Q: How long do most basement remodeling projects take to complete?

A: It can vary based on many factors. First, you need to consider the size of your basement. If you live in a very large home with a spacious basement, then it will obviously take longer to finish the space than if you lived in an 800-square-foot home. Plus, youll need to consider the basement finishing method that you use. Drywall and other traditional construction materials can require more time to install than pre-made finishing systems. Bottom line: Ask your contractor. He or she should be able to give you an accurate timetable.

Q: Is there anything I can do to protect my basement against mold and mildew?

A: Once upon a time, the answer to this question was maybe not. Now, many of the basement finishing systems offer protection against mold and mildew growth. Unlike the walls in traditionally finished basements that have been constructed using drywall, the walls of many finishing systems are made from breathable materials that dont trap moisture, thereby making them inhospitable to mold.

Q: How can I keep my basement warm during the winter?

A: When constructing your basement walls, be sure to add ample insulation. Or, if youre not thrilled with the idea of shoving fiberglass sheets between studs, then you could choose a system that has thermal insulation already built in. Whether youre finishing your basement the traditional way, or youre set on using a system, you should be able to properly insulate the space.

Q: How much do basement remodeling projects cost?

A: Ah, the million dollar question (pun intended). There truly is no way to estimate the cost of a basement remodel without first inspecting the space, assessing the homeowners needs, and choosing a finishing method. In general, though, some basement remodels are less expensive (on a square foot basis) than aboveground construction. But again, this may not hold true for all basement remodels. If you want a more precise answer, you should consult your local basement finishing contractor. Most contractors provide complimentary estimates, so feel free to shop around for the best price.

Q: How do I find a Basement Remodeling Contractor?

A: Ask around! Word-of-mouth recommendations are always best, because youre speaking with someone who has firsthand experience with the company. If you rely on an ad in the newspaper, a billboard, or a flyer in the mail, then youre only seeing what the contractors marketing folks want you to see. You can also visit the Better Business Bureaus website to make sure youre choosing a company that doesnt draw a lot of complaints. Or, you can consult Angies List to find a pre-qualified company. When you ultimately select your contractor, make sure youre clear on the projects completion date as well as its cost. Surprises are never good when it comes to basement remodeling!
