Are whiteboards really better than blackboards? The sight of a blackboard brings back nostalgic memories for many people who got their education within the last decade or two. However, blackboards are slowly becoming phased out in favour of white boards. So, why are whiteboards being preferred by many people to replace blackboards?

Let us begin by explaining why blackboards are losing popularity before we go to the advantages of wall mounted whiteboards. The first obvious pitfall of blackboards is that it requires chalk which produces powder that is an irritant to the respiratory tract. Apart from the irritating properties of chalk, blackboards are usually messy. A person handling chalk cannot avoid getting his hands covered in a layer of chalk dust. Blackboards also get dirty much quicker than wall mount whiteboards. Without further ado let's look at some advantages of wall mounted whiteboards.

Versatility

Apart from the obvious purpose of writing on and illustration, whiteboards can also be used as screens for showing presentations using projectors. The smooth white surface is perfect as a screen for presentations. Whiteboards can also be moved much easier than blackboards hence they can easily be used in different locations.

Better for teaching

Most teachers now prefer to use whiteboards because they are easier to write on because of the writing tools they require. Compared to traditional chalkboards, whiteboards use whiteboard markers which are much easier to write with for prolonged periods. The writing on a whiteboard is much easier to read compared to that of a blackboard. This makes it easier for students or the audience at other events to follow what a person is presenting. Magnetic whiteboards are quite common and they enhance the presenter's ability to add value to the presentation since items such as whiteboard magnets can be used.

Whiteboards are usually white surfaces which serve almost the same purpose as blackboards. However, there are also glass whiteboards which can be used in the same way as ordinary ones. Glass whiteboards can be mounted on walls and they have the advantage of not interfering with the overall appearance of the room. Glass whiteboards are also customizable as you can choose between sizes, glass finish, and colours. The aesthetic appeal of glass whiteboards is therefore more than that of traditional whiteboards.

Whiteboards can be used for interactive presentations

Whiteboards are not only restricted to classrooms. There are some whiteboards that also have the capability to display images and come equipped with touch-sensitive surfaces. Such whiteboards are very important for presentations that require the use of many different diagrams. This is functionality that traditional blackboards can come nowhere close to matching.

Interactive whiteboards have another important benefit. Traditional blackboards frequently had huge 'DO NOT ERASE' messages for notices. The content on an interactive whiteboard can be saved and hence never get lost. Whiteboards are therefore better for use as noticeboards than traditional blackboards. Whiteboards are becoming progressively more affordable as demand increases and soon they might be available in schools, colleges, and conference room. This will mark an important turning point in peoples' ability to present their ideas.
