If you are utilizing a pallet racking system at your facility, you already incorporate arguably the most efficient, cost-effective industrial storage solution that is available. But, that doesnt mean improvements cant be made to increase your storage capabilities. Like any product, a pallet racking system can be enhanced in many ways. Here are a few simple things to consider with your pallet rack system if you are looking to maximize the storage potential at your business.

Expand Up and Out

One of the greatest things about pallet rack is that expansion is relatively simple. You can add new upright frames and cross beams to create new storage bays at any time, in two ways up and out. Expanding your pallet racking system upwards is likely the first option to consider, because that is where it likely will be easiest for most businesses. Chances are you probably didnt construct your pallet racking system all the way to the roof at your facility, so youll probably find ample expansion possibilities by adding new storage bays at the top of your system by installing new, longer vertical uprights. Doing this could present some logistical problems for example, expanding upward could lead to you needing different material handling equipment to reach those new storage bays so make sure you do some research before diving into this potential plan. The other alternative is to expand outwards, adding additional storage bays at the ends of the rows in your pallet rack system. If you have the flexibility to add an additional column at the end of a row, it will quickly boost your overall storage capacity.

Look at Narrowing the Aisles

Material handling equipment like forklifts need ample room to operate safely, so when initially designing a layout for a pallet rack system it is vital to leave sufficient space between aisles. This will help you to avoid the potential for collisions between your loading and unloading equipment and the industrial shelving system. However, if you were overly generous in the amount of space you decided to leave when first designing your system, you can contemplate narrowing the aisles between the rows of your pallet racking system. Should you be able to save enough room between aisles, you could conceivably construct an entire new row of pallet racking, significantly upgrading your systems storage capacity.

Consider a System Reconfiguration

With the goal of every business being to grow, sometimes it is inevitable for change to happen. Change, though, could present great opportunities to increase storage. For instance, if you were storing bulky items when you first constructed your pallet rack system but now are storing smaller items because demand in your products has changed, there is a chance you could reconfigure your pallet rack system and create new storage bays. With pallet racking, every inch matters. Taking a hard look at what your inventory consists of and whether or not your pallet racking system is constructed to specifically accommodate those types of items could help put you on a path toward finding more storage space in your existing pallet racking system and, as a result, running a more efficient business.
