Are you making your plans for Memorial Day weekend? Will you be in the American Southwest? If so, consider taking a Grand Canyon tour theyre terrific. Your choices include bus, plane, helicopter and rafting tours, and theyll all be running on their regular schedules for Memorial Day. Book your tour soon; based on last year, theyll probably sell out quickly.
Most Grand Canyon tours start in Las Vegas and visit the West Rim, but several begin in Tusayan, AZ (just outside the South Rims main gates). Those tours do that rim.
South Rim from Tusayan
Chopper tours here fall into two categories: 30-minute flights and 50-minute flights. I recommend the longer flight, especially the deluxe version that uses an EcoStar 130 aircraft. This particular chopper has comfortable stadium-style seating and a panoramic, 180-degree window for great sightseeing.
I also recommend the plane tour that flies the same route as the deluxe helicopter tour it covers the South, East and North Rims along with everything in between. Youll have seen almost of the National Park by the time your flights over!
Some terrific all-day rafting tours are also offered at the South Rim. The standard version combines a bus ride with smooth-water rafting down the Colorado. The deluxe version substitutes a plane ride for the bus and includes the rafting trip but adds a 4x4 tour of the slot canyons at Antelope Canyon. These rafting packages are great for families because kids four and up can participate there arent any rapids.
Vegas Tour Packages
Las Vegas is known for its famous Grand Canyon tours especially by bus. You can choose a South Rim bus tour package (6 hours and 270 miles one-way) or a West Rim bus tour (only 120 miles from Vegas). Optional West Rim tour extensions include helicopter flights, access to the Grand Canyon Skywalk (the Glass Bridge), and rafting trips. South Rim bus tours can be upgraded to include a thrilling rim-to-rim chopper flight.
Speaking of chopper flights, most folks think the helicopter tour that lands on the canyon floor and comes with a champagne picnic is the most exciting tour that goes from Vegas to the West Rim. Youll fly over Hoover Dam and Lake Mead before making that exhilarating 4,000-foot descent.
Other helicopter Grand Canyon tours include flights over the Vegas Strip, sunset flights and tours that come with VIP access to the Glass Bridge.
Airplane tours do the same things but are much less expensive than helicopter flights. If you want to fly down to the canyon floor, you get off your plane and transfer to a chopper.
If youll be based in Vegas but want to see the spectacular South Rim, consider a plane tour that flies there directly. The package includes a two-hour bus tour of the Park, and the flight to the Rim only takes an hour (way better than the six hours the bus ride takes).
Conclusion
Hopefully youll be able to visit the canyon this Memorial Day weekend. The holiday is coming up fast, so youll need to book soon. Dont wait too long because these tours usually sell out fast, especially holiday weekend tours. Remember to buy your tickets on the Internet so you get the special online discount. It can save some big-time cash!
If you cant make it for Memorial Day, consider going there for Fathers Day! Youll have plenty of choices for bus, airplane, helicopter and rafting tours.
