Dentistry is the medical practice that determines diagnosis, preventive care and treatment of diseases and disorders of the mouth and associated structures and its relativity to totality of health. The ultimate goal of dentistry is that all patients are assured the highest standards of care employing state-of-the-art technology and technique for optimal quality and safest outcome at affordable cost. Obvious breaches of hygiene should wave a red flag in instigating the validity of the question does dirty clinic give bad impression about the dentist.

Dentists, all health care workers and the public share widespread concern regarding the cognizance of infectious diseases transmittable in the dental office. HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis, herpes and syphilis are potentially transmissible infectious diseases that often initially seen orally. Universal precautions of recommended infection control practices are imperative in all dental treatment settings.

Health care workers are at risk of acquiring blood-borne diseases. Dental care personnel carry a 10 times greater risk of becoming chronic hepatitis B carriers as opposed to the general public. Inherent in the dental profession is the feasibility of acquiring hepatitis C, HIV and herpes viruses. The converse risk of transmission to patients has not been qualified through epidemiological studies, although suspected small, is possible.

Standard methodologies for infection control include the consistent use of protective barriers, along with appropriate, accepted systems of sterilization and disinfection. Every dental practice should have standard modus operandi defining protocol in writing for instrument reprocessing, operatory housekeeping and management of injuries. These directives serve due diligence in standardizing safer work and protective practices.

Masks and gloves are a first line defense in the battle against cross contamination when used correctly. New gloves should be visibly donned in front of each patient after the dentist and chair-side assistant wash their hands upon entering the operatory. Opening the door or shaking hands while gloved defeats their purpose in protecting the patient.

The processes of sterilization and disinfection are the elementary basics in destroying disease producing microorganisms. Sterilization is achieved through heat or chemical application that effectively obliterates live bacteria and anaerobic spores from dental instrumentation. Sterilization is mandatory, after each exclusionary patient use, for any dental tool that penetrates soft tissue and bone. Those instruments that cannot tolerate high heat, autoclave application, must be disinfected. Disinfection does not destroy anaerobic bacteria.

The commonly used tools of the dental practice include two separate drills and a syringe for air/water spray. Each hold the propensity for introducing disease through heavy contamination by the inherent mechanics in their operation unless strict, official protocol in disinfection is used. Disinfecting only of the drill heads surfaces does not address the danger in exposing patients to previous patient saliva and/or blood.

Cooling and water spray in dentistry equipment can contain 10,000 times more microorganisms than tap water. Any motorized equipment or water source not sterilized according to strict guidelines is a high risk for becoming a contaminate mechanism that acts as a direct propellant to the patient's respiratory system. The relevance of does dirty clinic give bad impression about the dentist is critical in today's fear in the possibility of the spread of lethal, yet preventable diseases in the dental office.
