Summer is the perfect time to take a Grand Canyon airplane tour. Flights depart Las Vegas daily for the West Rim and the South Rim. And if you play your cards right, you can get these awesome trips at reduced rates.
Few travelers are aware that the Grand Canyon is just 120 miles from Vegas, which is a distance planes can cover in half an hour! Or if you plan to go to the South Rim, expect a 60-minute flight (driving takes 5.5 hours!).
Regardless which Rim you visit, you'll fly over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, the Colorado River, the West Rim and the Skywalk. Those continuing on to South Rim will see a large portion of Northern Arizona and Kaibab National Forest.
There are two kinds of airplane tours - air-only and landing. Like it indicates, air only means flying over all key landmarks before returning to Vegas. Landing tours by contrast set down on the rim itself and let you deplane
Landing Tours
West Rim landing tours come in all shapes and colors. My favorite is the one that lets you include a helicopter ride to the bottom. And if that's not enough for you, go ahead and add a Colorado River boat tour into the mix.
Another West Rim flight that gets a lot of attention is one that includes tickets to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Also known as the Glass Bridge, the Skywalk is famous for letting travelers walk some 70 feet past the edge until they are suspended 4K feet over the bottom.
South Rim flights from Las Vegas are, in my opinion, the only way to go to this destination. As mentioned earlier, it's just a 60-minute flight but you also get a 2.5-hour bus tour inside the National Park. Seriously, nothing beats this air-ground package.
Helicopter Ride
Except if you add in a 30-minute South Rim helicopter tour! These heli flights go from the South Rim to the North Rim and back. En route, you'll see all that the area has to offer, including an incredible ride through the Dragoon Corridor, the widest, deepest section of the National Park.
People ask me all the time if the planes are small. Truth of the matter is they are quite big and can hold up to 19 adult passengers. Further, their cabins are huge and seats are such that each passenger gets plenty of legroom and personal space. And if you speak a foreign language, the planes are equipped with trip narratives translated in up to 10 languages.
Canyon airplane tours are popular so I recommend you book them in advance. Typically, I say a week ahead of time but summer is particularly busy so I'm going to go on record as advising you to try for two weeks advance notice. The benefit to this is that 1) you'll get seats and 2) you'll get them at a decent rate.
Conclusion
Las Vegas airplane tours to the Grand Canyon are a must do for any traveler to the City of Entertainment. Flights leave daily for the West Rim and the South Rim and are available as air-only or landing. I prefer the landing because you get to see and do more but it really depends on your budget. However, if you book ahead of time, you should be able to get a hot rate on a landing tour that offsets the higher cost.
