If you are like me, you want to save money when you travel, and saving on plane tours of the Grand Canyon is no exception. So far, I've come across two strategies that are pretty much guaranteed. Lately, though, I've been getting even bigger discounts by using coupon codes.

Using Coupon codes

Promo codes consist of a string of letters and numbers intended to be used while you're buying tour tickets online. These coupons give you a certain discount off the regular price of the tour. Read the accompanying details because these codes have expiration dates just like store coupons do.

You might save 10 percent on your tour, so it is a great deal when you find one. Here is a look at how to use promo codes:

1. Select the tour you want

2. Input the number of tickets you need

3. Choose flight date and time

4. The online booking form will then display the total cost of your tour, along with a link to enter any promo code. Enter the code, hit submit, and you will see your better, reduced price.

Discount codes are great, but what happens if you don't have one? I've discovered that you can still get some terrific savings by following these two money-saving strategies:

1. Buy tickets online. You might think you can call the tour operator and use a promo code or ask for the internet rate. That won't work unfortunately. When you buy your tour tickets by phone you have to pay full price because the sales agents work on commission.

2. Book ahead. Buy your tickets at least one week in advance of your Grand Canyon airplane tour, and during the busy tourist months, buy them two weeks in advance. You will save the most money when you buy tickets in advance, plus you have the best selection when it comes to available tours, times, and dates.

West Rim Or South Rim: Which One?

If you are leaving from Vegas, you can go to either rim. The South Rim is farther, at 270 miles from Vegas, and it takes 6 hours to get there buy bus but just an hour to get there by plane. The West Rim is a short half hour flight away since it is 120 miles from Vegas.

If you'll be coming from Vegas, the rim you should choose comes down to what interests you. The South Rim is the place to go if you just want to see breathtaking vistas and the West Rim is ideal if you want thrills and adventure. Currently, there aren't any flights that connect the two rims. If you have an interest in doing that, ask if that has changed when you book your tour.

If you're starting from somewhere in AZ (Sedona, Phoenix, Mesa and so forth) you'll want to drive (your own car or a rental) to Tusayan, Arizona. The Grand Canyon National Park is located there. There are two airplane tours to the South Rim to choose from:

1. A 45 minute air only flight which shows you Dragoon Corridor and the rim's other main highlights.

2. A complete package that offers the aerial tour, a 4x4 trip through Antelope Canyon and a rafting experience over smooth, rapids free waters.

Hopefully this information about Grand Canyon airplane tour promotional codes will save you some bucks. You will save quite a bit by using a code, but don't forget to use it online so you get the special internet rate too.
