Teens are the most conscious among all age groups when it comes to physical appearance, specifically, body weight and figure. The reason for this is mostly due to how the society defines "beautiful" and "sexy". Hollywood celebrities, like Lindsey Lohan and Britney Spears, are all exhibiting very lean body tone, which most teens follow.

Since being really slim has become a trend, there comes a growing concern related to teen weight loss. Most of the time, because of peer pressure, influence and embarrassment, many teenagers resolve to starving themselves simply to quickly lose weight. This method is not good for a teens health since it can bring about negative effects to them or can even cause them serious diseases such as bulimia and anorexia.

How can parents help their teens lose weight? Teen weight loss should not be seen as a problem, unless of course, if the teen daughter or son gradually loses weight after missing important meals. As parents, you should be able to guide them to do things the right way.

The first thing that you should do is to make an assessment whether or not your teen needs weight loss. Have your son or your daughter checked by your trusted physician to know if losing weight is necessary. Should there be a need for your teen to lose weight, it is better if you go to a nutritionist to make sure that he or she gets the safe and healthy weight loss program. However, this is not really required. All you have to do is serve a well-balanced meal.

There is really no need to cut down on meat intake since teens are physical active. They can always burn calories with the various activities they engage themselves into. It is important that they follow a high fiber diet to help with the proper digestion of food. At the same time, fibers, especially non-soluble fibers, help to keep them away from eating more than they should.

Encourage your teens to be patient and discourage them from starving themselves. Starving oneself will only make things worse as it slows down metabolism. Once his metabolism slows down, he will just keep regaining the weight he loses by skipping important meals. Eating discipline and regular exercise can be very helpful to maintain a well-proportioned body. Losing weight takes time. It can happen in an instant but the result would not be permanent and at the same time can be very dangerous. Therefore, it is much better to just take the conventional and proven process.

Drinking plenty of water, especially first thing in the morning, can help in teen weight loss. So, you should also encourage your teen to make it a habit to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. In fact, the more glasses they drink in a day, the more the result will be rewarding. Water therapy is so far the most safe and healthy way of losing some pounds.

Remind your teen that losing weight is a process. It is better to do it the proper way than regret later.
