Statistics show that when entering or leaving your home or any other building, you are vulnerable to muggings, assault, home invasions, and a wide range of other crimes. Because you enter and leave your home every day, you don't think about your actions as you do them. As a result, you are not aware of potential threats, and don't have time to react before you are confronted or attacked between your driveway and your front door. The same goes for walking from a parking lot into a store. When entering or leaving, always remember to:
Avoid carrying large stacks of items that block your vision or make it difficult to unlock your door quickly. It might seem like a hassle, but it's much better to take smaller amounts in several trips than to try to balance so much that you must walk slowly and pay more attention to the packages than to your surroundings.
Always lock the car door, even if you're just running in for a second. Remember, a second is all a thief needs to get in. This is especially true if you are parking around a lot of other people, such as at a curb as you run into a store. The thief could easily get in your car and drive away without anyone realizing he doesn't belong there.
Keep your porch light on. This way, you won't be surprised in the dark. If you think you might arrive home after dark, turn it on before you leave. A porch light costs just pennies a month to operate, and will make the exterior of your home much safer, both when you're there and when you're not.Walk quickly inside. This is particularly true after dark and if you don't feel that the neighborhood is very safe. Walk straight into the building while paying attention to your surroundings.
Carry self defense devices such as pepper spray, a stun gun, or a powerful flashlight. These are handy not just in driveways and parking lots. Remember, you could be attacked anytime, anywhere. Whether you're in a parking lot, in the mall, or at the park, you should have something with you to get yourself out of a potentially dangerous confrontation.
Follow your instincts. If something doesn't seem right, you may be heading into a dangerous situation. It's safer to sit in your car with the windows up and the doors locked, or in the store or business, than to exit into an unknown situation, even if you are prepared to defend yourself. If you're at home, call someone to come over. If you're in a commercial area, ask the store for a security escort to ensure that you reach your car safely.
Above all, pay attention to your surroundings. Because you drive around in your car every day, you probably don't pay too much attention to what's around you as you walk to or from it. Even if you think you'd notice something out of place, like a strange car parked on the street, chances are pretty good that you wouldn't notice something suspicious until it was too late.
