It isnt always easy to keep active and competitive as we grow older. For many people, the days of high school and collegiate sports quickly become a fading memory and it is easy to grow listless thinking of great summer days spent legging out a double, leading the fast break, and taking a shot on goal on the soccer field. Yet, for Milwaukee residents, these memories dont have to fade into nostalgia thanks to an active recreation league that offers people to the chance to play their favorite sports on a weekly basis.

The beauty to playing in a recreation (rec) league is that it gives you a chance to get the competitive juices flowing but is also a lot of fun and a great way to meet people. Many people organize teams with their friends and families, while plenty of others sign up for their favorite sport as a free agent and get assigned to a team that is need of warm bodies. League sports are typically played once a week over the course of several months, with playoffs at the end of the regular season to determine bragging rights and championship glory. Yet, while everyone clearly wants to win, youll find people varying levels of athletic prowess playing in community leagues, ranging from those who are trying to relive some of their glory years to those who are just looking for a good excuse to get a little exercise and go celebrate at the end of the game.

Another advantage to joining a recreation league is that there are a tremendous number of sports for you to choose from many of which you probably couldnt otherwise play on a regular basis. For instance, joining a softball league is a great way to play without having to worry about organizing enough people to field two full teams. Whats more, league sports are professionally organized, played on gorgeous, well-kept fields, and monitored closely by unbiased umpires and referees.

Joining a rec league is also an opportunity to try playing sports that you might not have any or little experience with in the first place. For instance, one of the most popular recreation league sports among adults across the country is actually kickball. This may seem a little surprising on the surface since most people havent played kickball since grade school, but the game is actually a lot of fun because it is hard to take too seriously and doesnt require much in terms of equipment. Plus, a lot of folks are surprised to learn that catching, throwing, and kicking that big red ball is harder than it looks, which can lead to both tremendous plays and some laughable moments.

The health benefits associated with being active in adult sports should also be considered. A lot gets made about the social and competitive aspects of playing sports, but the opportunity to run around and get some good exercise at least once a week is a big deal, too especially for individuals who have desk jobs and are otherwise not especially active.
