While most people are aware of the possibility of using a stun gun for self defense, few have heard of stun pens. Relatively new to the market, many people have already found this device to be an excellent option for self defense. If youre concerned about your safety, you may be interested in this high-powered, lightweight, and affordable gadget.

A derivative of the larger stun gun, used by both civilians and police for several decades now, stun pens provide a great alternative to lethal force. If you want to be able to stop an attacker in his tracks, but don't want to carry a gun or knife, this is an accessible and convenient option. The stun-pen offers a great alternative to the larger family of electrically charged self-defense items by providing a tool that resembles a small flashlight and yet provides enough voltage to incapacitate potential attackers.

Hikers, joggers, walkers and other individuals who may not think to pack a larger self defense product, such as a TASER device, in their purse or bag may be interested in this device that can be held easily in the hand while walking to or from the car. Typically measuring less than 7 inches long and 1 inch in width, a stun pen can fit into the smallest evening clutch or the pocket of your jeans.

It will deliver an ominous crackling sound if discharged into the air. The sound of the electricity flowing through the device, is often enough to scare away potential attackers even without actually using the stun ability, in the same way that a dog's bark or a snake rattling its tail warns you to stay away. This tell-tale crackle may discourage potential attackers from harassing you and encourage them to find some other prey.

There are a variety of stun pens on the market today, and you may want to investigate exactly which product most suits your concerns. One of the main variables is voltage. Though it doesn't take an extremely high voltage to incapacitate an attacker, some people find it reassuring to have a high-voltage unit for their defense. Stun pens offer up to 800,000 volts of protection, more than enough to take down an attacker, no matter their size. Most devices allow up to a dozen or so discharges before the battery needs to be recharged, and some even use regular alkaline batteries, making them easier to recharge on the go.

In addition to the small size of these stun pens, they are also rather maneuverable and easy to use, and this is one of their principle benefits over stun guns and similar self defense tools. Unlike their bulkier stun gun counterparts, they may lack a certain feeling of power and masculinity, the media usually portrays such devices in the hands or purse of a women. However, dismissing stun pens as girly or wimpy is premature, as they actually offer a great deal of protection, no matter who is wielding them. This powerful, affordable, and easily concealable device is a great option for self defense.
