A detox diet is the perfect way to really try and cleanse your body of various toxins and waste products that tend to build up through having a mainly poor diet, although some are due to chemicals that are found in our environment. Having these leftovers in your system can lead to all kinds of health issues so it does make sense to try something that is going to clear them out from time to time.
So what is actually involved in a detox diet?
Basically it means you are eating things that are as close to their raw natural state as possible, but at the same time also avoiding things such as caffeine, alcohol, or even processed foods. These last three things are known in the industry as stressors and they are seen to influence the body in a way that has to be avoided during the diet.
Are the health warning associated with this kind of diet accurate?
There is no doubt that a search online will throw up various warnings connected to a detox diet, but it is worth saying that it is entirely safe when it is done in a controlled manner. It is true that some of these diets can be harmful to your health, in particular those that have you on water and fruit for a couple of weeks, but in actual fact this approach is simply not required. Instead, there are a number of things you are still able to eat over the forth coming weeks that will make a huge difference to your internal system.
How can you follow a sensible detox diet plan?
The part about cutting out things such as alcohol, caffeine and processed foods is still a good idea and you should look at replacing it with eating more fruit and vegetables, but on top of that you should pay more attention to the amount of sugar and salt you consume in a day. Do look at trying to stick to the idea of five portions of fruit and veg a day along with wholemeal grains, lean meat, low-fat dairy products, and fish. By having a balanced diet along those lines you will find that your liver, which acts as your built-in detox machine, will start to cleanse itself rather than being shocked into it.
How long does it take to work?
This does depend upon the individual, but one thing that is very important is to not look at this detox diet as just being a quick way to lose weight, even though it will happen, but instead look at the long term benefits. Yes you may end up drinking just water and eating less for a couple of days to really kick start it, but look at switching to eating things that were mentioned above so your body is not starving itself, but instead is cleansing all of those toxins out all on its own.
So a detox diet can be an ideal way to cleanse your body of all of those nasty toxins and waste products, but it does have to be done in a controlled manner. The good thing; however, is that once it is done you should feel as if you have more energy and completely rejuvenated and being healthier will also be a great advantage as well.
