A fleece scarf is the perfect gift for men, women and children during the holidays. Options found in department stores are often overpriced and poor quality. Anyone can make a fleece scarf gift in their own home for less than $10. It takes approximately thirty minutes to make a scarf. You will need one yard of fleece in the pattern of your choice; you can choose to use two patterns and select half of a yard of each; dressmakers chalk, a sewing machine with thread matching the fleece and sharp craft scissors. If you want to know more about this topic, you can read the tips and guide below.

1. Wash the fabric using a sensitive skin laundry detergent such as All Free and Clear or Seventh Generation. This will bring out any shrinking that could happen and also ensure that the fleece is anti-pill.

2. Start by laying out your fabric on a flat surface. Be sure that the fleece is completely smooth. You will see the rolled edge of the fabric which is approximately one centimeter wide along one edge. Cut this off following the fabric as your guide.

3. Next, use a ruler to measure 12 inches across the fabric. You are measuring the distance across the yard or half of a yard of fabric which you have purchased. This should be shorter length. Fleece typically comes in 48-inches or 60-inches as the width. This will be marked on the fabric at your local craft store. Use the dressmakers chalk to draw a line and then cut the fabric.

4. Repeat step 3 for the other piece of fabric.

5. Line up both pieces of fleece and pin the long sides together using straight pins in a horizontal direction. Do not pin the short sides.

6. Thread your sewing machine and place the pinned fabric on the platform to feed. You should start the feed two inches down the long side of the fabric. Use a 1/8th or of an inch hemline. Stop sewing when you are two inches from the bottom of the fabric. Repeat this process on the other side of the material.

7. Once you have finished sewing, remove all of the straight pins. Take the scarf and lay it flat on the table or cutting mat. Carefully cut strips that are one inch wide along the short edges. These strips should be two inches long. Be sure to cut through both pieces of fabric.

8. Tie the two pieces on each end together in a knot. If you do a standard knot you will need to tie it twice to secure the hold. This will create a more fringed look. If you choose to tie both strands at once, this creates a more simplistic look. Repeat this through all 24 strands that you cut.

9. Roll the scarf up and wrap it with a piece of cloth ribbon. You can easily attach a gift tag to the ribbon for a simple scarf gift or you can place it in a gift bag or box for the recipient.
