One of the inherent difficulties associated with identifying the symptoms of degenerative disc disease is that this condition has many of the same symptoms that are also associated with minor injuries in the back or neck as well as other, starkly different degenerative spine conditions. The only way to know for sure whether you suffer from degenerative disc disease is to speak with a doctor and receive a professional diagnosis. With this information in hand, you can be certain that you know what the root of the problem is and craft a treatment regimen that is right for you. So what exactly is degenerative disc disease?
For starters, the term degenerative disc disease is in many ways a misnomer because it isnt actually a disease. Instead, this condition describes an instance where one or more of the intervertebral discs that normally cushion the spinal column become severely deteriorated as a result of years of wear and tear. In a healthy spine, each individual disc acts like a shock absorber for the body and is made of a tough outer shell (annulus fibrosus) and gel-like nuclear material (nucleus pulposus), which give the disc its strength and flexibility. However, over the years, the annulus fibrosus naturally becomes worn and brittle, which can cause the disc wall to bulge beyond its normal parameters between the vertebrae and small tears to develop in the disc wall, allowing the nucleus pulposus to seep into the spinal canal. While some degree of deterioration is normal and considered part of the aging process, when this degeneration causes the patient significant pain, they are often said to have degenerative disc disease.
One of the interesting things about degenerative disc disease is that this condition isnt always symptomatic in and of itself. More often, when an individual suffers from problems as a result of a herniated or bulging disc, it is because a nerve root or the spinal cord has become constricted by herniated disc material or a swollen disc wall. As a result, effective treatment of these symptoms is contingent on alleviating this nerve compression.
Some of the most common degenerative disc disease symptoms that are associated with nerve compression include localized pain, pain that radiates along the length of a nerve, numbness or tingling in the extremities, a feeling of pins and needles, and more.
In order to effectively treat these symptoms, it is essential that the origin of the problem is identified and the cause of the issue is accurately diagnosed. Depending on the severity of the problem, the patients health, and other factors, a number of possible treatments may be recommended. That said, in most cases, a regimen of conservative, nonsurgical techniques are typically effective means of overcoming most symptoms, with the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, and stretching exercises being all particularly popular. Alternatively, some individuals may consider scheduling surgical decompression surgery to remove the source of their nerve constriction. To learn more about all of your options, speak with a doctor in your area today.
