Whether you already have a paper shredder or are considering getting one, there are some accessories you can get that will make using your machine a more pleasant experience. Here are five great accessories you should know about.

1. Bags and boxes. Emptying the waste bin of your shredder is never fun and it can also be messy. One way to make this job easier is by using plastic bags in your machine. That way, when the bag gets full, you just need to close it up with a twist tie and then toss it into the recycling bin. You can try using shopping or garbage bags depending on the size of your device, but there are also specially made bags you can purchase. These products are resistant to tears and are much more likely to fit your machine rather than a trash bag. Boxes are another great way to making emptying your shredder's waste bin much easier. You can even line these a box with a bag to make your supply of boxes last longer.

2. Storage shelves and racks. Depending on what type of machine you have, you may be able to buy a storage shelf or rack for it. These items attach to your device and give you a bit more space in which to store the documents you need to destroy so they're not cluttering up your office. You can also use them to store office supplies and your other accessories, such as oil and bags. (More on oil in a moment.) Storage shelves and racks are generally easy to install and they don't cost an arm and a leg either.

3. Noise reducers. A lot of today's shredders are designed in such a way that they'll operate almost silently. This allows your office to not be totally chaotic and can even help your employees stay focused on their jobs rather than being distracted by the noise coming from a machine. However, if your shredder makes a racket, you may be able to purchase a noise reducer for it that will muffle the sound. One such product is the MBM DestroyIt Sound Reduction cover that's compatible with a lot of MBM's devices. There may be one that's right for your machine as well.

4. Oil. The single most important act of shredder maintenance is regularly oiling your device. To do this, you will need shredder oil, which is manufactured by such companies as Fellowes and GBC. This oil keeps your device's cutting mechanism lubricated which will make it run more smoothly and it keeps the blades from getting covered in paper dust. Using other types of oil (i.e. canola, olive, WD-40) is NOT recommended because it can really do a number on your machine. So make sure you have a good supply of oil on hand.

5. Automatic oilers. Finally, if you own a shredder that's used daily by a number of people, an automatic oiler may be a good investment. These products clip on to your machine and oil it as necessary which will allow you to focus on other things. A number of manufacturers make these products including Dahle, Formax, and Martin Yale, so there might be one that's compatible with your particular device.

As you can see, these products can really enhance your shredding experience by eliminating messes, reducing noise, and keeping the machine in good condition. By having some of these items available, you'll be able to shred like a pro - and enjoy doing so.
