LED refers to Light Emitting Diode and is a very commonly used term in lighting and decoration. It is basically a semi-conductor lighting device that is mainly used as an indicator lamp and also for lighting purposes. LED light bulbs are extensively used in homes, offices, commercial buildings and other establishments as an important aspect of lighting. Earlier, LED light bulbs mainly comprised low intensity bulbs but now these are available in visible, ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, which ensure excellent brightness.
LED light bulbs find a diverse range of applications in different industries, mainly electric and electronics industries. These bulbs are characterized by their features like perfect light emission, ample brightness, durability and compact size. In fact, the compact size of the LED light bulbs has allowed the development of new text and video displays and sensors. LED bulbs are applicable as replacements for traditional light sources in aviation lighting, automotive lighting (particularly indicators) and in traffic signals. Such diverse use of these bulbs, along with cost effectiveness and other features, make these bulbs immensely popular in the market.
LED light bulbs are advantageous over other traditional sources of incandescent lights. These bulbs consume less electricity and remain functional for a longer time period. Some of the other advantages of these bulbs include improved robustness, smaller size, faster switching and greater reliability. However, these bulbs require more precise current and heat management than other sources of lighting. More advanced usage of LED bulbs includes use in communication technology, owing to the excellent switching rate. Infrared variations of LED bulbs are also used in the remote control units of several consumer products like television sets, DVD players and other domestic appliances. The longer service period of these bulbs is because of the fact that these are prone to very limited wear and tear when operated at low currents and optimum temperatures.
LED light bulbs are widely appreciated for maintaining consistent light output even in cold temperatures, unlike traditional lighting methods. This feature makes these bulbs a good replacement in areas such as supermarket freezer lighting where these have lasted longer than any other lighting form. Their use in freezers is more prevalent due to the fact that these bulbs are very energy efficient and do not emit heat.
LED light bulbs are available in different colors and are made of a variety of materials. Some of the common colors of these bulbs are blue, purple, violet, red, orange, yellow and green. Importantly, almost all the varieties of devices using LED bulbs are very safe to use and don't cause any adverse effect on the user. In short, owing to their salient features like reliability, vast variety of colors, compact size, coolness of light generated and energy efficiency, these bulbs are extensively used in numerous electronic and electrical devices. Efforts are already on to further develop the LED technology and design more efficient and useful bulbs. These bulbs have really been a boon to various industries and hence are preferred by renowned companies and also find application in daily usage.
