People often ask if EBay is still viable as a business platform. Some people habitually say there is now no money left in eBay. You cannot start a new business on the site and hope to be successful at doing so. There is too much competition, too many sellers, too many low priced products and so on and so forth.

But How Much of this is Really True?

The truth is that eBay is just as much a place for a viable business as any other retail place online or offline. The test is whether you have the ability to create that business yourself or not. Plenty of sellers have started their own business selling on eBay and gone up against plenty of competition and made it a success. If they can succeed, it is possible for lots more people to do the same.

The secret of whether certain people succeed or not lie in how much they focus on their own business. For example if they have a very small profit margin, poor products or zero marketing skills, they are laying themselves open to failure. If then, their competition reduces their prices by a small margin; they are effectively right out of business.

Too many sellers also rely on nothing but price to get them sales. Prices are important but they are not the be all and end all of business success. In fact if you focus on making your prices as low as possible you stand a far greater chance of going out of business whether that is on eBay or anywhere else.

The clue here is to think about whether you can compete in another area. For example some sellers distance themselves from their competition in the area of quality. Others focus on being different in terms of the product range they sell. Others might package up several things together rather than selling everything separately. This is just some examples but there are lots of ways in which selling differently can make you stand out and survive.

The truth is that as long as eBay is there and buyers love to buy from it then sellers can use it. There are possible businesses to build and good money to be made long term. Perhaps then it is not a question of whether the site and the business are viable it is a question of whether the seller is viable. Unfortunately not everyone sees it that way; some failed sellers would rather focus the blame for their failure on the site and on their products, rather than on their own poor decisions.

Every business has rough times and every business can take a while to become successful. Perhaps some people are simply not cut out to work for themselves. If they were determined to be successful on eBay they would not fold at the first signs of failure. Instead they would redouble their efforts and achieve more because of it.

Which group do you fall into? Because the truth is, if you want to build a successful eBay business, you need to be able to work hard and have plenty of determination to succeed.
