Given the opportunity many of us would prefer to work from home if we could. As highway traffic gets more congested and our homes move farther and farther into suburbia and make commutes longer and longer, we long for the chance to avoid all of the hassle and make a living on our own schedules, at our own pace, and from our own home offices, answering the phone in our pajamas and working away on the computer while relaxing over a third cup of coffee. Boy, that would be the life!

Well, it is possible to have a successful home-based small business or cottage industry; many people do it, and there are many opportunities for success. However, it's not as easy as just deciding to work from home, and most of the time people who have small businesses work much harder and longer hours than someone who commutes to an office, not to mention having more responsibility. However, if you want to run your own business from home, there are many opportunities out there.

Many people's success stories begin with joining up with a well-established home-based sales company, selling anything from vitamins to makeup to food containers to spices. Many of these companies have been around for decades and many, many people have done very well selling for them. While you're still working for a company, you have the freedom to participate on any level you choose, put in as much or as little time as you like, and be able to do your job on your own schedule. People have been finding these to be ideal opportunities for years, and they continue to be a good idea for someone who wants to learn the ropes of running a home-based business. You will often have a manager to report to and a well-known product to sell but still have the personal freedom to run your business as you decide. This is a level of freedom that appeals to many.

You can also choose to turn what perhaps has been a hobby of yours into a small business. There are cottage industries for photographers, personal chefs, child care personnel, artists, writers, handymen, yard care, home and business cleaning services, pet sitters, antique pickers, researchers - the opportunities are endless. If you are an accomplished amateur, why not turn your hobby into a full-time career and make money doing what you love? You can network with others in your area who have small businesses and participate in already established groups, or you can have business cards made and start handing them out, and let your business grow by word of mouth. Do keep a portfolio of your work, and collect recommendations from those for whom you have performed your services. Satisfied customers will be happy to spread the news of your new business and will help your home-based business grow.

If you are considering having a home-based career, you already know you will need to use your ingenuity, hard work, cleverness, originality and the witness of your happy clients to make your business grow, but if you are willing to invest your time and grit into your service, you will be able to build a successful career from home.
