Most families living in America today are aware of the threat of violence. In fact, it's hard to turn on the news these days without hearing about a recent violent crime. Cases of assault, rape, and murder make the headlines from coast to coast. On the other hand, many people think that such cases are overblown, and the risk of becoming the victim of a violent crime is actually lower than the media would have us believe. Just how common is violent crime in America today?
There are four major offenses considered to be violent crimes. These include murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. In addition to these four categories of violent crimes, there are also other crimes, such as robbery, that may turn violent. The broad definition of a violent crime is any crime that uses violence or a threat of violence.
In 2004, there were nearly 1,400,000 serious violent crimes reported in the United States alone. Among violent crimes, aggravated assault is the most common, at 62 percent of all reported violent crimes. Although this statistic has declined in recent years, it still means over 850,000 aggravated assaults every year. Assaults happen in nearly every city across the country, in rural and urban areas and even in areas of the city that are generally considered safe. The point is, you can never be sure that such a crime will never happen to you.
Robbery is the second most common violent crime, at over 29 percent of the total. Over 400,000 robberies, defined as the taking of personal property by the use of violence or the threat of violence, are reported in the US each year. In addition to robberies in which a person is attacked on the street, there are also home invasions and other property crimes that may turn violent.
Rape and sexual assault represent 6 percent, or about 94,000 crimes per year. Approximately 6 of every 100 women living in the United States will be a victim of forcible rape or sexual assault. This is the only violent crime in which females are the primary victims. For all other violent crimes, men disproportionately fall victim to attack. Even physically strong, young men can fall victims to violent crime - your appearance, no longer how confident, is not enough to keep you safe.
Murder accounts for approximately 1 percent of all reported violent crimes in a given year. Although this might seem like an insignificant percentage, this translates to about 15,000 murders each year, more than enough to worry anyone. The fact that murder is statistically rare won't be much of a comfort to the family of someone who has been murdered all the more reason to protect your family members from the possibility.
Now that you are aware of these statistics, what can you do to protect yourself from becoming one? As the realization that no one is immune from such violence sinks in, more and more people are turning to self defense devices as a way to protect themselves and their family members. If you should find yourself in a potentially violent situation, wouldn't you want to be able to protect yourself?
