Over the past few decades, people have found a lot of different ways on how to use stainless steel. There is stainless steel in infrastructures, buildings, homes, appliances, cars and even the pots and pans at your home. How come stainless steel is a preferred material for a lot of things? Is it really much better than the other metals? What makes it really popular these days?
Better understanding of mens stainless steel should start by understanding what this metal really is. It can be best described as an alloy of iron and carbon. This also has a chromium content that ranges from 10.5 up to 11.5 %. It was back in the 19th century when people started using this metal for everyday things. During this time, it could not be mass produced yet. It was only in the 20th century when ways on how to produce more stainless steel were discovered.
The reason why stainless steel does not rust is because of its properties. The chromium in this metal is the cause why it is capable of resisting rust. Rust is brought about by oxidation. In the case of stainless, steel, when oxygen comes into contact with chromium, it results to chromium oxide and not rust. Chromium oxide is like a film that encapsulates stainless steel and acts as a defense against corrosion.
It has to be noted though that there is also a possibility for stainless steel to corrode and form rust. When stainless steel is used and exposed for a long time, continuous oxidation may also affect the exposed layer of it, eventually leading to rust and corrosion. Also, if the metal is scratched, this can increase the chances that it will corrode.
The very best way to avoid rust and corrosion of stainless steel is to always keep it clean. It would be wrong to use abrasive instruments when cleaning it. As long as it is maintained properly, stainless steel can withstand changing weather conditions and varying temperature.
There are different grades for stainless steel too. It depends on the composition of it. The most common type that is being used these days is the 304. It is also recognized as the most versatile of all. Grade 304 has 18% chromium and 8% nickel. There is also grade 316 which has 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2% molybdenum. Grade 316 is used for various industries like medicine, marine and laboratories. It is preferred for more complex tools and devices because it has higher resistance to rust and corrosion. It costs more expensive than 304 too.
Because of the commendable traits of stainless steel, there are endless ways of how it can be used. Not only is it useful in various industries, it is even made into jewelries these days. More and more jewelry designers are using stainless steel for rings, earrings, bracelets and others. Its resistance to rust makes it a good alternative to gold and silver. It does not cost as expensive but can still make you look fabulous.
