We've all experienced that moment of panic when we realize we've lost our wallet or keys. Maybe you were lucky enough to recover them within a few minutes, or maybe you've had the distressful experience of never finding them again. This feeling is akin to our world falling apart.
Losing things is part of being human, for sure. But what if the keys to your house and vehicle were to fall into the wrong hands? Or, worse yet, an entire wallet full of IDs, credit cards, and other personal information. Because this information is so powerful not only within your daily life, but also to an identity thief you must take the necessary precautions to avoid losing these critical belongings.
The key is prevention. The first step is to always keep these items in the same place to avoid misplacing them. Some advise you to keep such items together as a group, so that you only have to search for one group instead of several items. You may even want to chain them together so that neither become lost. Others, meanwhile, caution you to keep these items in separate pockets, so that if one is stolen you don't also run the risk of having everything of value to you being stolen at the same moment.
Always be aware of where your belongings are, whether they are in your pocket or you've taken your wallet out to pay for a purchase. It often happens that you misplace your wallet in the bench of the park or the table of the restaurant you have just visited. By the time you recognize that you have not recovered your wallet, it may have vanished for good.
The second step is also simple: keep your wallet and keys on your person at all times. Do not set your purse in a shopping cart or tuck it under the table in a restaurant, and then walk away from it. While the increasing risk of having a wallet stolen can happen anywhere, but it's much more likely when you're out and about in a crowded store or restaurant.
It is especially important to protect these belongings when you're unsure of the safety of your location. For example, if you're traveling, walking alone at night, or in an unfamiliar area of town, keep your belongings close. Also pay particular attention to how you're advertising your worth. Do you open your wallet to reveal a wad of bills every time you pay for a coffee? Are you walking down the street playing with the buttons on your fancy new cell phone? Both of these activities can make you more of a target for pickpockets and other thieves with their eye on your belongings.
Finally, consider how easy it would be for a thief to grab your wallet or keys, even if you know right where they are. Is your wallet clearly visible in your pants pocket? Do your keys dangle from your bag? A thief would be able to snatch both easily before you even know what's happening. Conceal these items from view to minimize the threat of theft. Consider carrying pepper spray or a similar self defense product, which can help you fend off any attacker, whether they're after your wallet or are staging a violent attack.
