The Grand Canyons magnificent South Rim is in northern Arizona, close to the Utah border. Its often referred to as the official Grand Canyon and its the part of the National Park where youll see the most spectacular vistas. The canyon covers a million acres - way too much to see if you stay on the ground. Thats why seeing the Grand Canyon by airplane is such a popular option in less than 60 minutes youll see places that not many travelers ever do!

The South Rim is the perfect day trip from Flagstaff, Sedona, Phoenix, Scottsdale and other Arizona cities.

A lot of folks ask if they should take one of the plane tours that start in one of those cities. Its actually cheaper and more fun to rent a car or SUV, drive to Tusayan, Arizona, and then fly from there. Tusayan is just outside the Parks main gates and has all the services youd need, including restaurants, hotels, fuel and stores. At about a 1 hour-drive, Flagstaff is the closest to Tusayan of those four Arizona cities. The drive from Phoenix is the longest, at about 4 hours. If youll be flying to Tusayan, flights from Phoenix are probably the cheapest.

Plenty of travelers coming from Vegas go to the South Rim, too. Because the one-way trip is about 275 miles, I always suggest flying instead of driving or taking a bus. Its a direct flight and it takes less than 60 minutes. Getting there on the ground would take 6 or so hours. Thats a total of 12 hours just to get to the South Rim and back!

Vegas plane tours are a terrific value because a 2 -hour bus tour inside the Park is bundled into the package. During your tour youll see a number of South Rim highlights, including:

Mather Point
Yaki Point
Yavapai Observation Station
Grand Canyon Village

An upgraded version of this tour adds an exciting 30-minute chopper flight from the South Rim to the North Rim and back. The flight includes Dragoon Corridor, which is the widest, deepest section of the entire Grand Canyon! Because this package also includes the bus tour I mentioned above, it gives you a comprehensive South Rim experience.

When you see the Grand Canyon by airplane, youll take off from Grand Canyon National Park Airport at Tusayan. From there, youll fly along the South Rim til you reach the Parks eastern border. Next, youll head to the North Rim (isolated and pristine!) and then south again, through exhilarating Dragoon Corridor. Among the highlights youll see along the way:

Imperial Point the highest place in the Park
Zuni Corridor
The Painted Desert
Navajo Bridge
The Desert Watchtower

The airplanes used on these flights are safe and well-maintained. Theyre also specially equipped for terrific sightseeing:

Roomy cabins with plenty of personal space
Personal headsets for in-flight tour narration (in 10 languages, no less!)
Huge viewing windows
Comfy, lounge-style seats
Great climate control

Price-wise, plane tours are cheaper than helicopter flights but more expensive than bus tours. If youre considering seeing the Grand Canyon by airplane, I strongly suggest buying your tickets online, directly from the tour company. Thats where youll always find the best deals. Just complete your entire purchase transaction right on the companys website so you qualify for the special Internet-only discount!
