Las Vegas temperatures are so hot that they're cracking 100 degrees (37F) with ease. So, if you plan on visiting the Grand Canyon this summer, make sure you go by helicopter.
Departures
Flights from Las Vegas depart at 6 a.m. and go all the way until 6 p.m. I recommend you take a morning trip before it gets too hot. That said, avoid the "early bird" specials. You'll either have the sun in your or not have it all if you go to the bottom.
I also recommend that you consider upgrading your helicopter package to include an EcoStar 130. These choppers are best of class and come with ice-cold A/C. Further, they have 25 percent more cabin space and feature stadium style seating (every seat is a great seat!).
Las Vegas helicopters go to the West Rim only. They can't reach the South Rim because it's too far away (277 miles). The West Rim, on the other hand, is just 120 miles east and takes a chopper about 45 minutes to get there.
Landing Tours
The great thing about the West Rim, too, is the fact that helicopters are allowed to land at the bottom. This can't be done at the South Rim because the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Parks Service prohibit it for safety and noise-pollution reasons.
That fact that choppers can land at the bottom opens up a world of opportunities for travelers. For instance, there's a spectacular flight that goes to the base for a picnic. This same trip can be extended to include a ride down the Colorado River.
Then there's the flight package that includes VIP tickets to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Not sure if you know this but the glass bridge lets you walk 70 feet past the edge and into empty space. It's pretty spectacular, especially considering that by the time you reach the bridge's farthest point youll be standing 4,000 feet over the bottom.
The Sights
You can catch an aerial tour from Vegas, too. Like the landing trips, it goes over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, Fortification Hill, Grand Cliff's Wash, the West Rim and the Skywalk. The views are spectacular. This trip is ideal for visitors who have limited time for sightseeing or who are on a tight budget (air tours are the cheapest option).
Dress accordingly when taking a helicopter ride during a Vegas summer. This means wearing shorts, loose fitting clothes and sunglasses. If you plan on landing, I recommend packing a long-sleeved cotton shirt, a brimmed hat, sun block, water and salty snacks.
Lots of folks ask me if they can reserve the front seats. The answer is yes. I dont recommend that you pre-pay for this upgrade. Its best to make such a purchase the day you check-in for your tour. This is because seating is assigned based on the total weight of all passengers so getting a front seat is really based on the luck of the draw.
Conclusion
Its no secret: Las Vegas is hot. Further, the deeper you go into the canyon, the hotter it gets. To visit the National Park in style and comfort, I strongly recommend helicopter tours. These aircraft come with great A/C and deliver and unforgettable experience. Do reserve your flights in advance. Las Vegas helicopters are very popular and sell out all the time. Lastly, make sure you complete your booking on the website. Doing this ensures that you get the low Internet rate, which often will save you a substantial amount of money.
