Working from home can be enormously isolating. If you have a busy day ahead of you it is quite possible to get up, get dressed, have breakfast, start work and then go through the entire day without coming into contact with another human being. And when you finish work you might be so tired you end up just watching some TV before heading off to bed in an exhausted state.

You might be able to earn more working from home, but your social life can suffer as a result. And it isnīŋŊt just your social life either īŋŊ you can miss out on those important interactions with clients and work colleagues also.

Depending on the nature of the work that you do you might well send and receive email to and from various people during the day and is a form of contact with the outside world. You may also have telephone contacts throughout the day to ease any feeling of loneliness you may experience. It might benefit you to find some homeworking forums and similar sites online where you can learn from and interact with other people who are in a similar situation as yourself.

It should be pointed out here that this isnīŋŊt necessarily for networking or business purposes. It can be good to spend a few minutes during a coffee break or at lunchtime exploring a forum that has other members who also work from home. Simply saying hello and interacting with other people like this can help to alleviate the feeling of isolation you get when you donīŋŊt go out to work each day.

Most forums are split into different sections so you can immediately go to the section that appeals to you the most. Depending on the nature of the forum there might be any number of different areas to explore. For example most will have a general area for all kinds of discussions, and also specific areas where you can chat about what it is like to work from home. Another good example of a specific topic area involves information and advice concerning the practicalities of working from home īŋŊ for example tax and bookkeeping.

One forum we explored recently even had a coffee break section. This was specifically designed for home workers to visit whenever they were having a coffee break. It is essentially the virtual version of the office coffee break, and it provides a nice change of pace from your normal workload.

As you can see, there is a lot to be gained from visiting homeworking forums from time to time. You should make sure they donīŋŊt encroach on your working day though. Allocate a specific portion of time to visiting them and donīŋŊt let them overstay their welcome. They can be immensely useful but you should keep them to a limited area of your working day.

The best idea is to start by finding one that you like the look of, joining it and seeing if it will work for your needs. If you donīŋŊt like it go and find another one.
