Shaving is the act of removing unwanted hair with a razor. Shaving is practiced both by men and women. Men mostly practice it to remove their facial hair but also to remove their leg, underarm, chest and head hair. A man with his beard completely removed is called ‘clean-shaven’. Woman mainly shaves to remove their leg, underarm or any other body hair. A razor is a tool provided with a sharp-edged blade.

Shaving can be done in two ways-- either wet or manual shaving or dry shaving. Wet shaving is the traditional one and requires two types of manual razors - straight razors and safety razors. Dry shaving is done with an electric razor. An electric razor is an advanced type of razor that contains a set of oscillating blades that help remove the hair. This ensures fewer cuts in the skin, quick shaving and no water requirement but of electricity is a disadvantage.

Wet shaving has three requirements- a good quality razor, a good brush and shaving cream mixed with water as a lubricating agent. Lubricating the skin prevents the painful razor burn and also helps in hair softening. Luke warm water must be used with cream as it softens the hair, open the pores and cleanse the skin. Generally an aloe vera shaving cream is recommended by experts which contains unique combination of some natural ingredients to soothe and calm skin. Shaving brush also plays a very important role in getting a good shave which is made up of badger hair.

Cream is applied on the skin with the shaving brush which has soft long bristles. It helps make rich lather for a good and a smooth shave. An after-shave lotion is also used by many men after shaving which contains an antiseptic agent like isopropyl alcohol, thus prevents infection from cuts. It has a good aroma and also acts as a moisturizer to soften the facial skin.

There are also side effects of shaving. They include cuts, abrasions, irritations and skin infections. These can be minimized by using a fresh blade every time. Avoiding pressing of razor against the skin and applying a plenty of shaving cream can also be of great help. Cuts during shaving can be caused by wrong razor movement and can result into bleeding that can be stopped by cold water, pressing tissue paper etc., but use of moistened alum is recommended. Bandage can be applied if required, to promote healing. Razor burn is caused by using a blunt blade or an improper technique in areas especially with coarse hair that results into irritation appearing as a mild rash that disappears in few hours or days.

Always shave must be done first in the direction of the hair growth and then after re-lathering against the direction of hair growth. Short strokes are a better option for a close shave. Women also shave with the same technique but their strokes must be made upwards apart from being short but on legs long upward strokes can be made.

Also after shaving, disposable razors must be discarded and the permanent ones must be properly cleaned and then re-used. Shaved body parts must be rinsed off with cold water. Cuts, nicks and scrapes must be checked after shaving and if found must be cleaned with peroxide or antibiotic ointment. Use of cosmetics, creams or lotions must be avoided on the shaved areas for the next 8-12 hours to give skin abrasions time to heal and help prevent irritation that can be caused by chemical applications on the skin.
