When the time comes to hire movers, you dont want to choose just any moving company. There may be dozens of moving companies serving your area, but chances are only a select few really offer the service you need and provide the services you are looking for. Of course, finding a moving company that offers the services you need at a price you can afford can seem like a daunting challenge, but if you know what to look for when shopping around for movers, you will be certain to find just the right mover.

The first thing you need to do before looking for moving companies is to determine exactly what you need moved. Knowing this will help the movers you contact provide a more accurate estimate. For this reason, it would also serve you well to eliminate any items you no longer want or need, as this will not only help in lowering your overall moving costs, but will also reduce clutter in your new home. Another point to consider is whether the upcoming move may entail having to pack and load electronics, musical instruments, fine art, or other items that may require special care. If so, the movers will need to know ahead of time so they can properly assess the scope of the job before giving you a firm quote.

As you begin your search for moving companies, be sure that you check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The BBB rates each company based on the quality of its products and services, how many reports the company has received, and how well the business has handled complaints. An A+ rating is the highest a business can receive from the BBB.

In addition to checking with the BBB, you will want to consult Angies List to see what other consumers are saying. Angies List is a subscription-only website that prohibits businesses from rating themselves, meaning the reviews you will see on Angies List are honest-to-goodness, bias-free reviews. If, however, you prefer not to pay for a subscription service, then you can peruse the many free review sites available, such as Yelp, Google Reviews, Citysearch, and Yahoo! Local Listings. No matter what company you hire, be sure to look for a ProMover designation from the American Moving and Storage Association.

Once you have narrowed down the list of moving companies to a few candidates, be sure to get all estimates done in-home and provided in writing. There are various types of estimates, including guaranteed not to exceed estimates and quotes based on how much your items weigh. Also be sure to ask about costs associated with moving heavy furnishings, moving items up or down stairs, and moving during weekends or holidays all things that can potentially become a hidden charge during a move.

Finally, ensure that the movers are insured and that your items will also be covered by insurance. Many moving companies offer flexible insurance plans and can roll the cost of this coverage into your estimate.
