The Dave Matthews Band was formed in 1991 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Singer Dave Matthews recruited drummer Carter Beauford, saxophonist LeRoi Moore, bass guitar player Stefan Lessard (who was only 16 at the time), keyboardist Peter Griesar (who later left the group), and violinist Boyd Tinsley. Dave Matthews Band made their public performance debut at the City of Charlottesville Earth Day Festival in April 1991. The band got their first official gig in May 1991 when they played at a private party. They were soon playing local clubs, and their fan base grew.

The band released their first album, Remember Two Things, in 1993.The album was recorded live at The Muse Music Club on Nantucket Island. It debuted as the highest independent entry on the college charts and went on to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), a rare accomplishment for an independent album. The band continued to tour, allowing fans to tape shows for their personal use. This resulted in them having a more interactive fan base than do most groups.

1994's Under the Table and Dreaming was the band's second album and the first to be released on the RCA label. The group went on tour shortly before the album dropped. Tour stops included two summers on the H.O.R.D.E. Festival's main stage. Under the Table and Dreaming went on to be certified four times platinum by the RIAA. Released in 1996, the album Crash debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album's single "So Much To Stay" earned the group a GrammyŽ award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Without any promotion, the band's 1997 double-cd live release entitled Live at Red Rocks 8-15-95 debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart and was instantly certified platinum.

Dave Matthews Band released several live and studio albums and continued to tour during the late 1990s. They were nominated for four Grammys between 1996 and 1997. The band was the top grossing tour band in the United States in the year 2000. They released their fourth studio album, Everyday, in 2001. The album eventually went triple platinum.

The band continued to tour over the next few years. Their summer 2003 tour ended with a show in New York City's Central Park, a concert which helped raise $2 million for the city's parks and public education. Additional GrammyŽ nominations and wins followed. Over the next several years, Dave Matthews Band continued its magical formula of recording both live and studio albums and touring. The band has been part of numerous charity-affiliated tours, including the Vote for Change Tour, a Red Rocks benefit for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and Live 8.

While the band was on tour in 2008, saxophonist LeRoi Moore died tragically due to complications resulting from an ATV accident. The band finished touring and took a short break to deal with the loss. They then returned to the studio to record the GrammyŽ-nominated Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King, released in June 2009.

Dave Matthews Band is fresh off a European tour. Their Summer 2010 Tour gets underway on May 28 with a stop in Hartford, CT. Tickets for all tour stops are currently available, so purchase yours now. You don't want to miss an opportunity to witness this high-energy group in action.
