Studies have found that at least one in five women experience chronic bladder infections in a year while men may never have to deal with the disease in a lifetime. There are several known causes of bladder infections. Sexual intercourse has been noted to be the most common in women owing to the fact that bacteria find easy passage through the urethra into the urinary bladder. Cranberry pills keep these bacteria from colonizing the urinary tract in addition to ridding the body of other toxin-producing organisms.

Causes

Millions are believed to have experienced a bladder infection, which starts at the urethra when bowel organisms such as E. coli and S. saprophyticus travel all the way from the gut. With women the incorrect manner of wiping after a discharge of fecal matter out of the bowel drags coliform bacteria from the anus and pushes them into the urinary tract that serves as a breeding ground for these bacteria. Men may develop the same risks when kidney stones travel down the ureters into the bladder or when the prostate gland becomes enlarged in that both conditions hamper the movement of urine, thereby promoting a buildup of populations of bacteria in the urethra. The habituation of these bowel organisms deep into the bladder walls may, consequently, lead to chronic bladder infections.

Symptoms and Risks

The urgent need to go to the bathroom again and again even with small amounts of liquid in the bladder is one of the earliest symptoms of chronic bladder infections and, in most cases, accompanied by the uncomfortable discharge of urine. These symptoms may last more than a week with growing, sometimes burning, pain in the lower part of the abdomen. Complications vary with age, but may include the involuntary excretion of urine, the continuing urge to vomit, the need to get up to urinate while asleep, and the discomfort in the genital area during sexual activity, all of which are signs of increased risks, in which treatments generally involve antibiotics, and call for a visit to the doctor.

Prevention and Treatment

Unless complications arise there are a number of ready measures to prevent and treat the recurrence of bladder infections in the future. It all boils down to a change in lifestyle. Increasing liquid intake results in washing away of harmful organisms inside the body, given there is a frequent discharge of urine. It also helps to vacate your bladder after sexual activity.

In addition, doctors and other health professionals have consistently recommended the use of cranberry pills or cranberry juice. Separate studies support the claim that cranberry extracts effectively remove the presence of bowel organisms without any recorded adverse effects. A group of women with a history of urinary infections were administered cranberry extracts and reported to have eradicated all symptoms associated with chronic bladder infections. Cranberry promises to bring more health benefits, including its alleged role in fighting off bladder cancer.

Today cranberry pills are widely used as a more potent alternative to cranberry juice. Look for these pills or juice at your local or internet vitamin store. Always choose standardized cranberry in name brands like Solaray to ensure quality and purity of the product you buy for better health.
