Auckland, New Zealand presents a unique and almost perfect balance of natural wonders and modern day city attractions. With its ideal location by the sea, the city offers more than a couple of marine sights that are simply must-haves. On the other hand, when it comes to two other tourist passions - food and shopping, the city does not disappoint. The city center has streets filled with trendy boutiques, and almost every area, from the central district to the harbors are filled with top-notch restaurants where you can dine in style, al fresco, or even just casually. It's easy to find these places; you can ask any tourist, hotel concierge, or a local where to eat and hop 'til you drop, and they will surely give you a great recommendation or two.

What is more challenging to find are places you can go to so that you can get away from all the hustle and noise of the city. Auckland, New Zealand certainly does not lack in this area, as there are just too many places in the city (and the country) that offer a quiet refuge to anyone, local or visitor. However, these places are usually low in publicity and give in to the big spectacles that bigger attractions have. So, where exactly in Auckland's 'beaten path' can you experience peace, tranquility and breathtaking views where you can just enjoy the views and leave your cares?

The Awhitu Lighthouse is part of the Greater Auckland area, which means it is quite remote from the city center. Its far distance would require a drive coming from the city center to Awhitu Peninsula, where it is located. But the travel hassles are definitely worth it. From the spectacular view from the historic lighthouse itself (it is witness to some of the country's most ambitious and worst maritime exploits) to the deserted beaches, you will not lack in vistas that will have your camera go clicking. Be prepared to take in a lot of sea breeze, too!

If you want something closer to the city that is also as breathtaking and peaceful as the Awhitu Peninsula, there's the Tahuna Torea in Glendowie. Getting there is by a shorter drive, but upon reaching the place, you will be greeted by absolute peace and tranquility, you will forget you are in a city. 25 hectares of pristine lagoon, wetlands and unexploited scenery is capped by a wide diversity of bird life. Take in a lot of peace in the quiet Bucklands Beach or get fit in a number of branching walking tracks. Make sure you bring a map though, as you might get lost amidst all the peace and quiet.

Kitekite (also referred to sometimes as Kitakita) Falls in the nearby area of Piha is picturesque as can be. The first thing you will notice about this attraction is the unlike most waterfalls, this one has three tiers. It is definitely a sight to look at as you trace the water's path as it comes down from the highest point, stopping at each tier, to descend in two stops before it reaches the bottom. You can also follow the trail to the top, as there is a walk from the bottom of the falls all the way to the top, reachable within 15 minutes. Once you reach the top, you can take a cool, refreshing dip in a swimming hole as you revel in the view of Auckland, New Zealand, 260 feet below.
