Wall tapestries are a unique piece of modern art that can illuminate every room in your home. Traditionally, wall tapestries were woven on a loom by running two sets of interlaced threads through each other with one set running vertical and one running horizontal. Wall tapestries were often made of cotton thread, but wool, silk, or gold wasnt uncommon either. Some of the most famous wall tapestries have graced the walls of palaces and museums, including the nearly three-hundred foot long New World Tapestry in England and the Apocalypse Tapestry, which is the longest in the world at four-hundred and fifty-nine feet, located in France.

From the iconic biblical references to woven art to Iris Trojan War tapestry in The Iliad, wall tapestries have long been associated with storytelling, mythology, life and art. The principle of simultaneous contrast, initially theorized by Leonardo da Vinci himself and further elaborated on by generations of fellow artists, was adapted by Michel Eugene Chevreul, who was the director of dye works at a renowned tapestry works in Paris in the 19th century. These same color principles applied to the creation of wall tapestries would later be used to render color on television and computer displays.

With such a rich history, wall tapestries continue to endure as a desirable decoration in any room of any home. A well-placed wall tapestry can add personality to any room. Modern methods of production have contributed to their enduring popularity by offering a wide array of styles to choose from that compliment any color scheme or dcor theme. Calming landscapes featuring rolling hills, lush forest, frosty mountains, or serene lakefront scenes can bring a bit of natural beauty to any home and vibrant fields of colorful wildflowers add an eye-catching element among the rustic green and brown hues.

Homes decorated with a more modern flair can still benefit from the updated artistic tastes that current production methods enable tapestry-makers to create. These include colorful abstract designs, reproductions of famous artworks, and attention-grabbing patterns and color combinations.

Intricate paisley designs woven from luscious silk and glittering gold and silver threads add a taste of the exotic to bohemian homes and would find themselves to be a stunning addition among whimsical throw pillows, flowing curtains, stylish furniture, and complimentary accents.

Historically, woven tapestries have also served practical purposes in the home. Many of these roles can still benefit todays homeowners. Tall tapestries, hung floor to ceiling, can make a home with a low roof and claustrophobic rooms feel bigger and more open. Similarly, long tapestries hung across the width of a wall can make a small room feel wider. Smaller tapestries, paired with complimentary lighting, can serve to highlight a cozy corner or nook. Heavy tapestries were often used to insulate rooms and still serve in this capacity today, making them a very practical piece of modern art in addition to something wholly unique and beautiful in todays home.
