Every day, thousands of people across the world find themselves face-to-face with muggers, rapists, and other attackers. Though its easy to believe that this will never happen to you, the truth is that you must be prepared. Consider carrying pepper spray, a stun gun, or another self defense product, and learn how to protect and defend yourself against an attack.
The best self defense move is to avoid an attack in the first place. This includes several commonsense moves, like staying in well-lit areas, and not walking around alone in deserted areas, especially at night. Travel in groups, and dont be afraid to ask for an escort to your car after an evening shopping trip. If you must be in such situations, remove any flashy jewelry or purses, and cover designer clothing. Do not carry your iPod or other electronics; these can be attractive targets for thieves, and may also distract you. Use common sense to keep yourself from being a target for attacks.
Above all else, pay attention to your surroundings. Be aware of people following you down the street or towards your car. If something seems wrong, react immediately. If you do find yourself in imminent danger, your first step is to try to get away. Move towards other people, into a store, or near traffic or other well-lit areas.
By far the best way to fight back when face-to-face with an attacker is by using pepper spray, stun guns, or other self defense products designed to be used by amateurs. These are easy to use, provided that your attacker comes close enough, and are very effective at disabling the attacker long enough for you to get away. These should be in plain sight if a suspicious person approaches you, because often merely the sight of them can deter an attack.
For the vast majority of people, a physical fight is not a good strategy to escape an attacker. The fact is, in most cases the attacker could overpower you. Plus, your attacker came prepared for a fight, and may have a knife or gun. Avoid these situations if it is within your power to do so.
Martial arts moves, especially those you see in the movies, tend to be impractical in real-world scenarios, though martial arts training can certainly help you stand your ground. Still, if you find yourself without any other defenses, fight back. Do not stop fighting until your attacker stops attacking you and is disabled enough for you to get away. Use punches and kicks, and bite and scratch at your attacker. Aim for the groin, face, and throat. Land constant hits; if you stop fighting back for even a second, your attacker will have a chance to harm you. Whenever you get the slightest chance, run as fast as you can to the nearest area of safety. This is never the preferred result of an attack, but if it comes to a physical fight, do everything in your power to hurt the attacker so that you can get home safely.
