Teaching your children about self defense can be an awkward or troubling conversation, but its one that must be started at a young age. Although you want to protect your young children from the violence that exists in the world, its important to remember that it does exist, and its your duty to protect yourself and your family from attacks.

Young children should be taught their name, their parents names, their address, and their phone number, in case an emergency arises. However, you must also balance this with cautioning them not to talk to strangers or give out this information in non-emergency situations.

One of the most important self defense principles youll want to teach young children is who to trust and who to be suspicious of. This goes beyond dont talk to strangers and always trusting policeman, although thats a good start for young children. Personal boundaries are very important. Theyll need to know what kinds of people to avoid and who they can trust in an emergency situation. Although most young children are taught to obey their parents and other adults, teach them that adults who make them feel scared do not need to be obeyed.

Around the home, you can teach your children to keep their doors and windows locked and not open the door for strangers. You may also want to place personal alarms around the home in case there is trouble. However, be careful not to frighten your young children by describing the attacks these actions could prevent. Its important for them to know that their safety is important, but they must also feel protected and safe, especially in their own home.

Once your children are older and have been exposed to stories of violent attacks in the media and elsewhere, you may find it helpful to discuss these issues in further detail with them. If your children go out alone to friends houses, shopping, or elsewhere, think about providing them with a cell phone, personal alarm, or pepper spray canister so that they can feel prepared. If youre not ready to buy a regular cell phone, consider a childrens cell phone with a few preprogrammed numbers, or an out-of-service cell phone, which will always be able to call 911. This may also give you peace of mind. Ground rules like curfews may also help your older children and teens stay away from dangerous situations.

Teach your children to be confident in the world. Martial arts training can help with this, especially if they are faced with bullies in school. However, you may want to stop short of teaching your children to fight violence with violence. Other strategies, like finding an adult or yelling loudly, may make more sense when your children encounter a violent person. Role playing various situations can also help to teach your children about self defense strategies that are appropriate for them.

Its never too early to start talking to your children about self defense and safety topics. Besides self defense, you should also incorporate discussions about natural disasters and other emergencies. When dealing with children, its important to balance such information with helping them to feel safe in the world around them. You dont need to divulge too much information about the scariness of the world, but they do need to be aware that bad people exist.
