Around 1400, the English word "whelm," meant to completely cover something with water or it meant an overturned dish. In today's world overwhelm means being "completely taken over" by something.

Juggling between work, family and our personal needs make it so easy to get sucked into the never-ending list of to-dos and inevitably we end up feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

Many of us experience anxiety, stress and despondency because we feel as if we are losing control of our natural balance. This is the natural balance that allows us to walk, talk and chew gum slowly - all at one time!

However when unrealistic expectations begin to propagate, we became disconnected from the meaning behind our actions and it becomes easy to lose sight of why we committed to doing something in the first place as. So, it is easy to lose our motivation. Losing motivation for one thing can quickly snowball into losing motivation for another thing. And, eventually feeling overwhelmed takes over.

So, when you're overwhelmed, instead of trying to get as much done as quickly as you can, try slowing down to get re-connected with the meaning behind your actions. This simple technique assists so you're connected to the natural fuel for getting things done.

If you are facing a situation that makes you feel as if you are moving through quicksand, remember these three simple words - it will pass. There are times that may seem never ending, but in retrospect you may someday find yourself asking, "Where did all the time go?" In the big scheme of things, the years do fly by.

So how can one manage to take advantage of every precious minute despite the stressful and overwhelming feelings they may generate?

First and foremost one needs to create time. Yes, this is possible! To feel less overwhelmed, spend some time paring-down activities, which actually cause more frustration and stress than pleasure (like when you hear yourself saying, "hurry up, hurry up.") Make the cut and you will create a more relaxing and manageable life. As one is left with a larger percentage of activities that are welcoming and credible to your living experience.

Then:

Do one thing at a time, and see the task through to completion before starting something else.

And:

Build your energy reserves through self-care, and you will be more resilient when the unexpected comes up. Start with the basics. Eat well, exercise, sleep well, and drink water.

Lest we forget:

Allow for course corrections. And remember to throttle-back, slow down, and take breaks to stop the madness. Do something for yourself to bring you back to center. I like to take a hot bubble bath, listen to music, or even read my emails. Taking three deep breaths with my eyes closed also helps tremendously. Another suggestion: hop in bed in the middle of the day for a few minutes. Mm, feels so good.

"Slow down and everything you are chasing will come around and catch you."
