Working from home sounds like such a great idea. No commute, no need for a baby sitter, just sit at home and make a living! Many times I've had women come to me all starry-eyed and ask me how they can get started working from home like I do. "I want to be home when my kids get home from school!" they tell me. "I'm sick of driving all morning and not getting home until after dark!" And I understand, truly I do. Having to be away from your family is really hard, and that was one of the reasons I chose to work from home in the first place.
But, it's not really that easy. Working at home is still working, and there still is no such thing as a free lunch. You still have to find some way to trade something of value that you bring to the table for income.
There are many options these days that make working from home possible, and that's very helpful for those of us who have circumstances where working from home our best choice. For myself, my husband has Parkinson's disease, and if I weren't home to help take care of him, I'd have to hire someone to come in and do what I do for him at home. That being said, I am the household breadwinner, so I have to have a job.
I lucked out, as my background is in medical records, and that is a job that easily translates to a work-from-home job. I'd been working from home for my company for several years before my husband's disability made it necessary for me to come home - but I was already there! That worked out very well for me.
So that's one of the ways it can work. If your career is one that makes it feasible to telecommute, that is a really good way to get started. My job requires shift work, which I have to work my schedule around, but it's a small price for me to pay for getting to stay at home and work.
It would be worthwhile to examine which parts of your current job could be done from home, and if your company doesn't already offer telecommuting, it would be worthwhile to approach your manager with the proposal. You could explain how your company would save money by allowing you to work from home rather than coming into the office. You could perhaps offer to try it for a period of time and then run the numbers on your productivity and the money saved your company during that time period.
There are also many options for starting a home business, but first examine what options are available in your current situation. If you can transfer your office job to a home job, that is a great way to get started and find out if working from home is something that works for you.
