Before getting into how to diet safely, it may be a good idea to review some of the possible dangers associated with dieting. Why is it even an issue that people need to be careful about dieting safely?
In order to lose weight, a person's caloric intake must be less than the calories expended each day. There are two angles from which to approach this idea - reduce the amount of calories you east each day, and increase the number of calories spent by exercising more. The potential dangers of dieting come into play when someone reduces the amount of food they eat to a dangerous point. They do not get enough of the most important nutrients, and their bodies may fail to function efficiently or properly without these critical vitamins and minerals. Also, by not taking in enough calories, a person can soon find they have much lower energy levels, difficulty concentrating, and many other problems. Dehydration is also a problem faced by dieters who do not drink enough fluids. Rapid weight loss, which results from drastic reductions in caloric intake, leads to more serious problems as the body loses lean body tissue (such as muscle) in order to provide the fuel necessary for critical functions such as brain and nervous system activity.
So how can someone best avoid these potential dieting dangers? Probably the most important thing to do is to be sure to continue to eat a variety of foods which provide the necessary nutrients for a healthy body. Just as important as this is the need to be sure to drink plenty of water to remain properly hydrated. So how is one to actually lose weight while also being sure to eat enough to remain healthy?
The key is moderation. Some might call it portion control. Eat a variety of healthful foods, such as protein, fruits and vegetables, but don't overdo it by eating too much of any one thing. Of course, probably the most difficult thing to do will be to also cut back on sweets, desserts, and other foods packed with empty calories. Reducing total fat and increasing the amount of fiber in your diet are also important.
For any dietary changes to be maintained long-term, it is best to try to make changes gradually so they are more likely to become a habit. For example, one major but fairly easy change would be to cut soda out of your diet and replace it with water. There are plenty of flavored water drinks available which will be much healthier than sugar-laden drinks.
Gradually increasing your level of exercise is crucial as well. This does not have to involve a huge commitment of time and money to join a gym. It can be as simple as taking a walk each evening after dinner. Studies have shown that walking as a form of exercise can be extremely effective.
By following some common-sense ideas about improving your current lifestyle, it is possible to lose weight and diet safely without any of the dangers associated with drastic, extreme dieting fads.
