Reba McEntire is often referred to as the "Queen of Country" and it is no wonder with the amount of time she has been at the top of charts in country music. From the moment that she signed her first contract in 1975, she has been a presence that simply will not go away. To think that she may not have even been discovered were it not for a performance at a rodeo is somewhat incredible.
While she has always been talented, she more or less fell victim to the powers that is in the early stages of her career. She kicked around for almost a decade under a label that she would appear to have not been very happy with. Anyone who has listened to some of her early releases will see noticeable difference from the records that were produced in the 1980's.
Reba finally started to come into her own under the new label and started to produce albums with a better country feel to them once she signed with MCA Nashville Records. With more creative control, she could finally do the types of songs that she had always dreamed of in the style that she wanted. It was the turning point of her career.
Her first release under the new label was "My Kind of Love." The public obviously liked the new sound as well because that album produced two number one songs. All of a sudden, McEntire was a presence to be dealt with in the country music scene and has been ever since. That early success was only a sign of things to come as she has had twenty-four of her singles reach number one on the charts.
After establishing herself as the "Queen of Country," Reba started to branch out into other avenues. Her first film appearance was in the 1990 release, Tremors. That was the first of many stage and film appearances that led to her own show, Reba. Her namesake show aired from 2001-07 and was actually nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series (Musical or Comedy).
While being a country music star, she has obviously captured the attention of various different types of music lovers. Her lifetime sales rank her in the top ten all-time female artists and she is currently ranked second on the all-time female country artist list. You do not sell that many records by not appealing to more than one niche.
Reba McEntire is currently on tour and as usual, her tickets are going fast! After kicking the tour off in Tennessee, she hits the road and makes a quick swing through Canada and then it's back to the good old USA. The tour will conclude in August, but not before she plays at Country Fest on June 27th.
