To be honest the answer to this really does depend on personal circumstances but really it should as soon as the teeth start o darken or become a yellowy sort of colour. Sometimes leaving the teeth until they become very dark or even brown is too late for whitening as the staining have penetrated the enamel in to the dentin.
When we are in our teens the teeth are not a big priority and for this reason we do not pay enough attention to our dental health as we spend more time drinking cola and eating sugary foods. The time we get in to our twenties the teeth have started to stain and this really is the best time to whiten them as the staining has not become too deep and will lift out of the enamel quite easily. This is known as external staining and will always see a noticeable difference after teeth whitening but is the type of staining that everyday brushing will not be able to lift out.
Older people or heavy tea, coffee or red wine drinkers will get deeper staining as well as heavy smokers who also will accumulate deeper colouration of the teeth. The change of colour is gradual over a few years but will take a little longer for whitening to lift out of the teeth.
Do not get me wrong teeth whitening in the main will show off positive results but do not expect one teeth whitening for thirty minutes to remove years of heavy staining as sometimes a more extended course is necessary.
Teeth are very complex but if they have been stained then they can be whiter and this is how it tends to work. Only rarely the teeth will not whiten more than one or two shades because of an underlying yellowing of the dentin. This is caused by heavy medication or sometimes is just genetic and this dentin cannot change colour that much. A great example of this is when people have a grey or black tooth in the mouth which has suffered a trauma and the nerve in the dentin have gone dead. This type of tooth does not whiten as the colour being showed is being illustrated from the inside out and will teeth whitening is tends to be a outside to inside the enamel type of treatment and process.
The rules for the best time are down to available money and personal aspirations but do not leave it too long as the sooner you start the easier it is to manage and also the better your smile will look and the associated benefits like increased self confidence gained from having a whiter smile is never to be underestimated as being able to smile without being conscious of how our teeth looks is a wonderful thing.
To get and maintain a good smile always seek the advice of the dentist and keep up regular appointments for good dental health. Good luck with getting your new smile!
