Desktop Sharing software and Online Meeting Tools sound like they have a similar purpose but they are very specific in their use.

Desktop Sharing software is used extensively in businesses that offer technical and computer support. It will allow a technician to work on the computer as if they are sitting in front of the monitor. The technician can install software, remove viruses, change settings and do anything else short of hardware replacement or repair of connectivity issues. Some people worry about a third party gaining access to their computer but it is quite safe. When someone is trying to connect to the computer, Desktop Sharing programs will ask the user for permission before allowing the connection. While the technician is working the client can see everything that is being done to the computer and watch everywhere that the technician clicks. In fact, if the client is not careful they can accidentally take control away from the technician by moving the mouse or using a keyboard short cut. There are some web based applications that will allow Desktop Sharing but for the most part it will have to be installed on the technicians and clients computers. This is mostly for security purposes. You do not want to leave a open back door into your system. If the program has been installed then it is completely under the clients control and can be removed if necessary. Unlike the Online Meeting Applications, it does not usually have a way to talk with the client through video or audio, only text.

Online Meeting Tools are the more comprehensive suite of applications and can do much more than Desktop Sharing software. These applications will contain instant messaging, document collaboration software, video and audio call features as well as live chat. Since it is all tracked by the computer it makes taking notes obsolete because you can always check the various logs and email that you receive during the meeting. Many companies have begun to use Web Video Conferencing because of its efficiency and savings. Until Online Business Meetings became more prevalent, many business people found their day taken up by driving to and from meetings. Now that they do not have to leave their office, they only have to schedule a block of time from the meeting beginning to its end with no wasted time and as many people as needed can attend the online meeting. The amount saved in gas alone is enough to make a major impact on a companys bottom line not to mention if the meeting is taking place out of the area. The savings from having to purchase airline tickets, rental car, hotel and food alone are enough reasons to make the switch. There are many companies that offer this service so always compare pricing. There are so many things to take into consideration, it is a good idea to ask for a free trial and to make sure you will have customer assistance available if needed.
