Around the world, thousands of kids attend martial arts schools and remember it being a lot of fun. While the goal of martial arts training is often recreation, what about learning martial arts as a self defense strategy?

When it comes down to it, martial arts presents an interesting method for self defense. Though it's not for everyone and indeed, perhaps a pepper spray or a stun gun would make a better choice for some it's also very empowering to know that you have the physical skills to fight back against an attacker. For the confidence factor alone, learning martial arts is a useful tool in your self defense arsenal.

Taking classes as an adult, though, can be challenging from a purely logistical standpoint. There's working into your day, driving over to the school, the added stress and shyness of being around other students, and the competition with the belt ranks. Plus, what if you dont have that kind of money to shell out continually? In addition, the focus of such schools is not on learning real-world self defense skills, and what you learn there might not be applicable to a situation in which you're being attacked on the street. Though martial arts academies certainly have their place, it may not be best to go there for self defense techniques.

The answer lies in instructional DVDs. These programs can be watched and practices in the comfort of your own home. Its all on your time, your convenience, whenever you want. The one downside that has been noted is that there is no one forcing you to watch the DVD. If it really is important to you to learn self-defense, however, your ambition, drive and motivation will be easy, without the need to go to class each week. And after all, martial arts is all about self-discipline. The best part of all: a DVD would only cost a fraction of the cost of martial arts classes. You can get the same benefits of self defense classes without killing your budget.

An even better benefit is the wide variation if fighting styles and the ability to learn them all with ease with just several DVDs, instead of having to travel from school to school and pay extra money for extra classes. These programs focus on real-world self defense skills taught by experts who know how to best get 'regular people' ready to defend themselves, rather than focusing on the routines necessary to move up in the belt color ranks. You don't have to be a black belt to learn these skills and have the confidence to put them into action.

If you don't have the time or money to attend martial arts classes, learn in the comfort of your own home with instructional DVDs. Whether you plan to defend yourself using solely these strategies, or want to combine physical moves with the power of a stun gun or pepper spray, learning how to defend yourself confidently is a valuable skill.
