Why is it called the Southern Side?
The island of Tenerife is the largest in the group of islands situated on the south western side of Spain and can be travelled through in a Car Hire Tenerife. Known as the Canary Islands, the archipelago consists of 7 islands and 7 islets, of which Tenerife is the largest island and it is possible to cover the island in a Car Hire Tenerife. Being the most populated island in the archipelago yet removed from the mainland, this island has come up with many was to remain self sufficient through tourist Car Hire Tenerife.
The two sides
There are two sides to this island, the North and the South. This distinction is provided by the Volcano � mount Teide or �Pico del Teide� is the third largest volcano. It can be viewed from Car Hire Tenerife. It sits at the centre of the island and has come to be part of the Twelve Treasures of Spain. There is even an observatory present halfway on top of this volcano which is accessible by Car Hire Tenerife south airport.
Historical Etymology for the archipelago
History has it that the Canary Islands were named thus by the ancient Romans looking for new countries to trade with. On having discovered that these islands were inhabited with people who worshiped dogs the Romans gave the name �Canarii� or the �people with dogs� to the land. There are other references from ancient Greek writings too which verify the truth of this statement. Similarity to the Egyptian god �Anubis�, whose head resembles a dog is also stated, conveying the picture that the ancient settlers were people from Egypt. This could be a possibility due to its proximity with Africa.

As it is surrounded by the sea on all sides, it stands to reason that the main food on the island is a wide variety of fish and other sea food. One can visit the beaches by Car Hire Tenerife. Some of the most common types of fish consumed are the Combtooth blennies, Moray eels, Jack mackerels, sardines, various types of Thunnus, and the Atlantic mackerel. The most common form of cooking is to boil the fish with slight seasoning and a locally made sauce. Food can be ordered from drive � in restaurants when travelling in a Car Hire Tenerife.

Festivals are occasions for special delicacies and the island of Tenerife is no different. �Porc tacos� are a specialty and this is one of the ancient livestock used by man for meat. Tradition has it that the first pork was obtained from domesticated wild boars in China. Other than pork, the more common meat cuts are obtained from beef, goat, rabbits and poultry fowl. A special dish called the �Salmorejo� is made during festivals. It is a pinkish orange cream made from tomatoes, bread, vinegar oil and garlic. These are available at the local restaurants which one can see when travelling on the Car Hire Tenerife.
