If you suffer from a herniated disc in the neck, finding treatment is undoubtedly at the forefront of your thoughts. Yet before you jump right into a treatment plan you read online or heard about from your neighbor, it is exceedingly important that you visit a doctor to not only diagnose the source, cause, and severity of your problem, but also to ensure that you take the right approach to treatment. While there are all sorts of ways to go about addressing the symptoms that arise from a herniated disc, the wrong method may prove entirely ineffective, or worse yet, exacerbate your discomfort.
A herniated disc refers to a condition where the intervertebral disc that normally cushions and supports adjacent vertebrae develops a tear in the disc wall, allowing the nuclear material to escape the disc and extrude into the spinal canal. While this may sound like a potentially serious problem, in reality, it is extremely common and in some instances isnt even symptomatic. However, when this herniated disc material comes in contact with a nerve root or even the spinal cord, a number of symptoms may develop, ranging from local, chronic pain, to numbness and tingling or discomfort that extends into the extremities. As a result, effective treatment for a herniated disc in the neck is usually contingent on alleviating the nerve compression that arises as a result of the disc rupture (although in some instances the tear itself may cause local pain).
One of the first things to understand about herniated disc treatment is that it varies widely from patient to patient. This condition is quite common in the neck because of the burden placed on the cervical spine by the weight of the skull and the flexibility of the region, and as a result, a herniated disc can ostensibly develop in people of all ages. As a result, treatment for a young athlete, for instance, will be much different than for an elderly patient.
Generally speaking, however, herniated disc treatment is almost always first attempted nonsurgically, by using a prescribed regimen of several weeks or even months of conservative techniques. There are all sorts of potential treatments that can be used in this process in order to manage the patients pain and also improve or maintain spinal stability. For example, you might be recommended over-the-counter (or prescription) nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to help reduce inflammation in the neck. Many other individuals benefit from specific low-impact exercises or stretching exercises (such as Pilates or yoga) as a means to strengthen the neck and alleviate some of the strain placed on the cervical spine. Yet, it is also extremely important that no exercises are attempted without the approval of a specialist or personal trainer, because it is extremely easy to make matters worse by overdoing it at the gym.
Many individuals also turn to complementary or alternative medicine to assist in their herniated disc treatment. Options such as deep tissue massage, acupuncture, aromatherapy, holistic natural oils, and other similar treatments are quite popular. Finally, in the event that several weeks or months of conservative treatment fail to deliver the results the patient requires, there are several surgical procedures that might be considered, although this is usually a last resort.
