Most teen stars today seem to burst onto the scene in tween sitcoms or high school soap operas, but not Chlo� Grace Moretz. While this teen actress has been working professionally since 2004, she made her most memorable impression on audiences in 2010's "Kick-Ass." Playing opposite Nicolas Cage, Moretz stole the screen-and attracted controversy-as the ultraviolent, foul-mouthed kid superhero Hit-Girl in the R-rated action comedy. At only sixteen, Moretz has a lot more up her sleeve, and she's due on the screen again multiple times this year.
Chlo� Grace Moretz was born on February 10, 1997, in Atlanta, Georgia. The only daughter in a family of five siblings, Chlo� is close to her four older brothers, who still occasionally chaperone her at events. When her brother Trevor enrolled at an exclusive New York City performing arts school in 2002, the Moretzes realized their daughter had a talent for acting, and they began taking her to auditions.
Moving to Los Angeles with her family allowed Moretz to jump into the TV and film industry at only seven years old with a debut appearance on "The Guardian." The following year, she appeared in the 2005 remake of "The Amityville Horror" as the youngest child of the doomed couple played by Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George. At the time, she was still too young to see the scary flick at its premiere, but Hollywood took notice of her performance and rewarded her with a Young Artist Award nomination.
After "The Amityville Horror," Moretz played a variety of secondary roles, including stints on TV's "Desperate Housewives" and "Dirty Sexy Money" and parts in films such as the body horror "The Eye" and the indie comedy"(500) Days of Summer." She also voiced the curious young girl Darby in the computer-animated reboot of the Winnie the Pooh children's series, "My Friends Tigger & Pooh," a role she continued until 2009.
"Kick-Ass" was released in spring 2010, and the offbeat superhero movie, starring then little-known teen actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, became an unexpected hit. Moretz's turn as Hit-Girl arguably drew the most attention of all to the movie, first over the appropriateness of a then-thirteen-year-old playing a violent killer and second for her use of very adult language throughout. Critics and audiences took real notice of Moretz's talent for action-she trained in martial arts and weapons handling for the role, and she performed many of her own stunts-and comedic timing. Some even hailed Hit-Girl as a new feminist icon.
After "Kick-Ass," Moretz continued to gravitate toward dark, atypical teen characters, playing Abby, a young vampire, in "Let Me In," a remake of the Swedish cult hit, "Let the Right One In." She played Isabelle in 2011's "Hugo," directed by Martin Scorsese. "Hugo" was nominated for eleven Oscars at the following year's Academy Awards, and Moretz again received acclaim and nominations for her role. Moretz also allowed herself to have some fun in lighter fare, such as "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" in 2010 and "Dark Shadows" in 2012.
While most of her characters are anything but typical teens, she has remained down-to-earth throughout her success by staying close with her nonactor friends and family. She says that part of the reason she enjoys playing dark characters is because her own personal life is happy and normal. She enjoys video games, spending time on Twitter, and listening to music. Like many other teenage girls, she's also into fashion, and she's appeared in photo shoots for a variety of magazines, from "Teen Vogue" to "W" to "Nylon." She also does charity work for the Starlight Children's Foundation.
So far, 2013 is shaping up to be Moretz's biggest year yet. She'll reprise her role as Hit-Girl in "Kick-Ass 2," due out this summer. The sequel will go more into the character of Mindy Macready, Hit-Girls nonsuperhero alter ego, as she makes her way through high school, but the film is sure to offer more of the original's outrageous action scenes. She'll also debut as the title character in Kimberly Peirce's remake of "Carrie" opposite Julianne Moore and Judy Greer. As Moretz matures, her expected future roles include the dramas "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and "Dark Places."
With a wide variety of performances under her belt, Chlo� Grace Moretz has proven that she has skill in drama, comedy, and action along with the smarts to gracefully survive her career as a teen star. It's anyone's guess what roles Moretz will pop up in next, but they're sure to be as unique as her talent.
