In the quest for greater physical fitness it can seem that there are many obstacles. At every turn there seems to be a system one needs to purchase, or a gym one needs to attend, or specialized equipment, or any assortment of expensive and confusing possibilities. When the choices become overwhelming, it is a good time to ask if fitness gains can be had without all of the extraneous gear, techniques, and teachers. The answer is that it can, in a much simpler fashion. As an example, here are some simple ideas on how to build muscle without weights.

Using weights can be difficult if not dangerous. To gain access to a wide variety a membership to a specialized gym is often needed. To work out at home, the equipment needs to be procured. These options take money, time, and if working out at home, space. But they are not always necessary.

If one wants to reach competitive levels of body building, then perhaps, but if one simply wants to add mass and increase definition, definitely not. There are a great many tried and true exercises that have been done for ages that will provide results. These results can be reached quickly, fairly easily, and most importantly, safely. At the outset, however, before embarking on any dramatic health change please consult a qualified medical expert for advice.

As to the exercises, there are many, but for the beginner it may be best to focus on a simple few. For overall mass there are two practices that will work for almost anybody. These are utterly simple, and can be done almost anywhere. The first is swimming. Swimming will work every muscle group in the body simultaneously and is ideal for toning and weight loss. The only difficulty may be in finding a proper body of water and having the requisite weather.

The second best, and even more accessible, practice is walking. Walking will work many of the bodies muscle groups simultaneously, especially if one is mindful to swing the arms vigorously while walking. The best thing about the practice is that it truly can be done anywhere, by anyone, at any time. Walking needs no more than a decent pair of shoes, if even that. Walking may well be the finest single exercise available to us all.

Added to one, or both, of these routines, the exercises are ones that most will remember from some point in their lives. The first, for the upper body, will be push-ups and pull-ups. Pull-ups will require some sort of a bar to grasp, but even a tree branch will do. Push-ups can be done with a variety of hand positions for better results. Both will build mass in the upper body very effectively.

For the core area - the stomach, lower back, and buttocks - sit-ups remain an excellent choice. The classic version works fine, as does the more modern styled crunches. These can also be done almost anywhere, by anybody, and at any time. There is nothing fancy about them at all, and repetitions can be increased as fitness levels increase.

For the lower body, there are classic lunges and squats. All of these simple exercises can be done as an answer to how to build muscle without weights. Again, the results may not reach the tremendous size of a professional body builder, but they can certainly increase mass, tonality, and overall fitness levels simply and easily.
