Were you aware one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World is the Grand Canyon, which is located right here in the American Southwest? That shouldn't be a surprise. The scenic vistas offered at the canyon are simply spectacular. I don't think any other place is quite like it.
Family Fun
The Grand Canyon is the ideal family vacation destination. Besides the obvious sightseeing (there's nothing like it!), you can even take a smooth-water rafting trip down the Colorado River. These float tours are perfect for family members of all ages, the water is so calm that seniors and children over four are permitted.
It is difficult to appreciate how massive the Grand Canyon is when you arrive. When you are on top of the rim, the Colorado River is nearly a mile below you on the canyon floor. From that perspective, it looks like a ribbon glinting in the sun, but actually, the Colorado River is a mighty force that carved the canyon from rock over a span of hundreds of millions of years. Grand Canyon float tours give you an ?up-close-and-personal? view of the river and you'll be awed by the canyon walls towering above you.
Some visitors to the Grand Canyon like to stay on top of the rim and explore. Some hardy people like to hike down to the canyon floor. That would be difficult to do if you're traveling with younger children or senior citizens. Still, your family can get to the bottom of the canyon in other ways so you can better appreciate the region on a float tour.
Kids tend to love nature, and one of these tours is the ideal way to get them involved in environmental issues and natural history. Floating along the river is exciting for everyone and the views are indescribable, plus it is educational for the kids.
Colorado River
As you float by interesting rock formations, your kids will see basic geology up close. The tireless force of the Colorado River chiseled the Grand Canyon from the limestone in the Kaibab Plateau. Your kids will be amazed at the thought of it, especially when they see the rocks with their own eyes. It is mind boggling what erosion will do over eons of time.
Keep your kids engaged and have them be on lookout for wildlife such as the California condor, hawks, bighorn sheep, and rock squirrels. Observing plants and animals in their natural habitat helps your kids learn about the delicate balance of nature. Your kids can learn what different animals look like, where they live, and get an idea of what they eat and whether they're dangerous if provoked.
The Grand Canyon area is rich in Native American history too. Hualapai Indians have lived in the Grand Canyon thousands of years and now own the land at the West Rim. The Hualapai have become creative in ways to earn money from their land since the old ways of hunting for a living are gone, and one of the things they do is earn income from the Skywalk glass bridge.
To Wrap Up
Every teacher and parent knows it's important to keep children's interest. Although most kids are inquisitive, they also have shorter attention spans than most adults. The best way to fight boredom is to change the topic often. That is what makes smooth-water rafting so educational for your kids, it is exciting and the view is constantly changing so they stay interested. Your children will learn interesting things about wildlife and geology when touring the Grand Canyon, but most importantly, they will have great fun.
