An upholstered bench can come in many different styles, materials, fabrics, and colors. There is virtually no end to the kind of air you can evoke in a room with a brand new upholstered bench. The bench can add some extra seating in a room where there is not a lot of room. It can sit at the bottom of the bed as an extra place to sit in a bedroom. It can also be used to simply fill up a blank wall. No matter what you intend to use the upholstered bench for, there is sure to be a style that will say everything you want it to say. Let's take a look at some of the most important features to keep in mind when shopping for an upholstered bench.

Color

The color of the upholstered bench can come out in two different ways. The most obvious way is through the color of the fabric or the upholstery. One of the simplest ways to add some color to a room is with a bench that has a padded cushion attached to it. There are so many different fabrics available these days that you might even consider having a custom upholstery job done. Also when considering the color of the fabric, think about the fabric itself. See how the fabric feels against your skin and take that into consideration when you think about how the bench will be used. An upholstered bench for the bedroom might require softer fabric than one for an entryway.

The other way the color of the bench comes into play is through the wood or metal frame. Some benches have very small, thin frames, while others have grand, thick frames. Smaller frames tend to look daintier, while large frames can look too clunky in some spaces. Also the color of the frame and how it matches with the upholstery and every other piece of furniture in the room can make a big difference.

Use

As already mentioned, the type of use is also a very important part of picking out the right bench. Look for extremely durable fabric and a sturdy frame if you expect the bench to get a lot of use. If the bench is merely for show, then you might be able to get away with a lighter bench. If you have pets or children who will be sitting on the bench, then make sure to choose one with fabric that can be wiped off or cleaned very easily.

Some upholstered benches can also be used for storage, so you might want to consider this type of bench if you need a little extra storage space. The best thing about using this type of bench for storage is that no one needs to even realize that the bench is serving a dual purpose. Just tuck your items away inside the bench, close the seat, and no one even realizes that the bench is a storage unit. Even a thin bench can have a bit of storage space inside of it, especially if the bench is meant to be a piano bench.

Style

Of course style is always an important part of selecting furniture, and it especially comes into play with an accessory like a bench. Think about the wood trim in your house if the bench will be the only thing in the space. If there are other pieces of furniture in the room, then take into careful consideration the style of the other furniture. Remember, the bench should complement those other pieces and add to them, not look out of place because it is in a completely different style.
