Wild Yam was used by herbalists in the 18th and 19th centuries to treat menstrual cramps and problems related to childbirth. It was also used for stomach upset and coughs. The Native Americans used wild yam as a root decoction in order to relieve the pains of childbirth and also to treat muscular rheumatism. Wild yam was used by the Aztecs to treat skin disorders including scabies. It was also used as a poultice for boils. Herbalist Jethro Kloss stated that wild yam, when combined with ginger, can help to prevent miscarriage in his book Back to Eden.

Wild yam is responsible for relaxing the muscular fiber, which soothes the nerves and relieves pain, especially in the uterus. The herb is often used to balance hormones, which helps to treat nausea in pregnant women and aid in preventing miscarriage, cramps, and general pains during pregnancy. Wild yam cleanses the blood and also helps to strengthen the liver. Additionally, it helps in reducing cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure. The pain associated with gallstones can also be relieved with the use of wild yam.

A component known as diosgenin can be found in wild yam. This component is a precurosos of progesterone and has the ability to convert progesterone. However, wild yam does not contain progesterone. Diosgenin was used to make the first birth control pills in the 1960s. It was found by one physician that an herbal formula containing wild yam was seventy-one percent effective in reducing the total number of symptoms of progesterone deficiency. This herbal formula was also one hundred percent effective in reducing the severity of these symptoms.

Animal studies have found that wild yam contains steroid-like properties the restrain inflammation. Another study determined that the supplementation of natural progesterone was much more effective in preventing osteoporosis than estrogen. A study conducted at Johns Hopkins University tested women who had a progesterone deficiency. These women were over five times more likely to develop breast cancer than those women who had normal progesterone levels. The progesterone that comes from wild yam is closely related to natural progesterone synthesized in the body. When wild yam is absorbed by the body, it is easily converted into the same molecule as progesterone.

The root of the wild yam plant is used to provide anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, blood purifier, cholagogue, and diaphoretic properties. The primary nutrients found in this herb are calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, silicon, sodium, vitamins A, B-complex, and C, and zinc. Primarily, wild yam is extremely beneficial in treating arthritis, spasmodic asthma, bowel spasms, colic, uterine cramps, gas, liver ailments, morning sickness, muscle pain, and spasms. Additionally, this herb is very helpful in dealing with abdominal pain, blood impurities, boils, bronchitis, catarrh, cholera, hiccup, inflammation, intestinal problems, jaundice, nausea, nervousness, pain, rheumatism, stomach ailments, ulcers, and whooping cough. In order to obtain the best results when supplementing with this, or any herb, it is important to consult your health care provider before beginning any regimen. For more information on the many beneficial effects provided by wild yam, please feel free to consult a representative from your local health food store with questions.
