Remodeling a basement is an excellent way to add livable space to your home, but it can be difficult to decide how to best utilize this newly finished room. Here are a few of the most popular choices for homeowners who have renovated their basements.

If youve been thinking about remodeling your basement, you might want to create some office space where you can get some work done. The basement will likely be one of the quieter parts of your home once youve renovated it, especially if you choose materials that will provide acoustic insulation for the walls of the room. With much of the sound from the outside world and the family upstairs blocked out, you can set up a peaceful workspace using a desk, a chair, appropriate lighting, and any electronic equipment you might need to work from home.

Another popular use for finished basements is a playroom for the kids. Whether your child is just learning to walk or is already in high school, the basement can become a space your kids can use for all their fun and games. For toddlers and grade school-aged children, you can simply move your childs favorite toys into the room, and let the fun commence. You can also set up a TV to let your kid play video games or watch cartoons without disturbing everyone else in the house. Older kids with a musical or artistic streak would likely appreciate a place to practice their hobbies. No matter what type of room youd like to create for your children, consider that the walls will need to be durable to withstand bumps and dents. You may also want to paint the walls with glossy paint in order to keep the paint from being scraped off with every little scratch.

In contrast, perhaps you want to create a space for yourself where you can relax and unwind after a long day. If you enjoy blowing off steam by working out, a home gym might be the perfect use for your basement. All you have to do is hang a few mirrors, set up your preferred equipment, and enjoy the convenience and privacy of a personal gym. On the other hand, if watching your favorite movies or television shows is your favored way to relax, a home theater might suit you better. You can begin creating a theater by installing lights controlled by dimmer switches, and then you can add a TV, surround sound system, and any other electric accoutrements you need to immerse yourself in your favored media. Also, be sure to bring in some comfortable seating so you and your family can truly enjoy your new favorite room.

Whether you choose one of these options, or you have something else in mind for your basement, be sure that you have a clear-cut idea before you begin remodeling your basement. Your choice could influence the method you use to finish the walls, the paint you choose, the flooring and lighting you install, and more.
