Who doesnt like to go on vacation? When you get ready to go on a trip, even if it is only for a weekend, you plan ahead. You plan out what you will wear, where you will stay, but what do you do to prepare your home for your vacancy? Burglars love to take advantage of homes that are vacant while their owners are away on vacation. Therefore, when you make your list of preparation to-dos and what to pack, make sure to also make a list for increasing your homes security while you are gone.

Stop All Deliveries

You do not need the mail or the newspaper to arrive while you are away. So call the postal service and your other local subscriptions and make sure that all deliveries are stopped while you are gone. Leaving a pile of newspapers or even mail in the mailbox is a clear indicator to potential robbers that you are not home.

Trim the Shrubs

While you are getting the perfect hair cut for your trip, consider cutting down some shrubs outside. If you have bushes that are located just in front of windows to your home, cut them down to where a person cannot easily hide in them. Burglars have a tendency to hide behind shrubs and bushes while waiting to break into a home.

Skip Social Media Updates

Though you are tempted to tell the world about your vacation or even keep them updated as you prepare, avoid announcing any vacation plans or time away from home on social media sites. Even though you know your friends and family well, you do not know who has access to their computers or their social media homepages.

Talk to the Neighbors

Before you leave, tell your neighbors your vacation plans. Consider having a neighbor check on the property a few times while you are away to ensure that nothing has happened. Let the neighbors know to call the police immediately if anything happens or if they notice any unusual activity around your house.

Install Light Timers and Motion Detectors

The best way to deter a burglary is light. Have light timers installed inside your home that will automatically turn on and make it appear as though you are home. Use motion detection lights outside to help deter anyone from prowling around on your property as well as help notify the neighbors if someone has walked onto your yard.

Locked Out? Now What?

No one likes to be locked out of their home or car. It makes a person feel vulnerable and unsecured. Though your first step should be to call a locksmith, you will also want to get a little creative and see if there is a way to enter your home or vehicle without having a service provider show up at your door.

Be Creative

If you are locked out of your home, there might be a way to still get inside. If you have a gate, see if you can unlock it and gain entry to your house from the outside. Consider calling neighbors who have a spare key or even your spouse. If you have a spare key stored outside, make sure to use that before calling a locksmith. If your house keys were lost rather than locked inside, you will need to contact a locksmith regardless to have your locks re-keyed.

Neighborhood Crime Watch

Though you might be tempted to climb in the window of your own home or even hop the fence, you might want to consider the neighborhood crime watch factor. If you do not know your neighbors, go over and let them know ahead of time that you are locked out and trying to get in. If you see a police officer driving by, make sure to flag them down and let them know you are locked out. This will help avoid any undue embarrassment or hassle because a neighbor thought they saw a burglar trying to enter your home.

Call a Locksmith

If you are unable to gain access to your home, contact a locksmith in the area right away. Make sure the company you call is a local provider who can re-key your lock immediately. If you are calling after hours you will want to inquire about any emergency service fees as well as emergency re-keying fees. Since not all providers can duplicate a key on-site, they may have to charge extra to use a third-party service for making keys.

If you are trying to gain access to a car, make sure your car does not have an OnStar or other programmed service. Often these service providers can be contacted over the phone and can unlock your vehicle remotely. If you still need a locksmith to service your OnStar vehicle, make sure you contact the provider and let them know that a locksmith will be gaining access. This will prevent any alarms or law enforcement from being notified.
