Check out the items in this article for cheap things to do in London.
London has an amazing network of free museums!
Art lovers should visit the Tate Modern Museum or the National Gallery, both of which are part of London's free network of museums. The Tate Modern has a collection taking up seven stories of space. Its permanent collection is completely free to visit, while the rotating exhibits require a small admission. The National Gallery is Europe's most visited art gallery. It has art ranging from prehistoric cultures to today. Science explorers should stop by the Natural History Museum, where they'll find a huge collection of items ranging from dinosaur skeletons to a wide array of plants. Some of the specimen in this museum was collected by Charles Darwin himself! History buffs should spend a day or two at the British Museum. The British Museum is the most visited museum in London. It has over six million items of historic significance. Some of its most widely recognized items include the Rosetta Stone and an original Beowulf manuscript.
The London Eye offers a unique ferris wheel experience.
The London Eye is nestled between the Jubilee Gardens and Thames River. It's a cheap ride that's fun for individuals, families, and children. Even if you don't go for a spin, it's still an amazing view. It's 443 feet high at its tallest point. The London Eye is the tallest ferris wheel in Europe and perhaps the most famous. At night, the ferris wheel glows with blue lights, making it an ideal spot for a romantic date in London. A ride on the London Eye ferris wheel lasts about half an hour.
Take a leisure stroll across the Tower Bridge.
Interested in Victorian era technology? Take the Tower Bridge Exhibition for tourists, where you can also see the Victorian engine room used to lift up the bridge for boats. Although the exhibition costs money, a simple stroll across the bridge is completely free. The Tower Bridge is a must see for anyone new to London as it's a famous icon in the city. The Tower Bridge was built in 1886. Over 40,000 people cross the bridge everyday by foot or car. A walk across should take about 10 minutes since it's not too long of a bridge.
Buckingham Palace is a must see for any tourists.
The Changing of the Guard ceremony is free and takes place right outside the palace. It occurs everyday during the summer. During winter, you'll have to plan accordingly because it takes place every other day. Established in 1705, Buckingham Palace is home to the royal family of England. The palace also serves as a meeting location for state officials. Inside the palace, you'll find the Queen's Gallery which features art and furniture. Palace tours are open for tourists during the summer and is highly recommended. It has relatively cheap admission compared to other tourist attractions in London. Even if you're not planning on touring the inside, make sure to capture a picture with the palace which will be completely free.
Listen to Big Ben's bells chiming!
Although UK residents can still make an appointment to go inside, tourists won't be allowed in. This may be because Big Ben leans slightly towards the North West due to rocky foundations. Big Ben is the famous clock tower of London. Its official name is the Elizabeth Tower, Big Ben was originally the nickname for the main bell. The main bell is actually 13.5 tons and rings on the hour every hour. The side bells chime every 15 minutes. It's worth a visit to listen to the bells ring. The clock tower was built in 1858 and stands at about 315 feet tall.
