There are many misconceptions around the concept of self defense. Many people worry that if they fight back against an attacker, for example by using pepper spray or a stun gun, that they will be charged with a crime. In fact, as long as you do not use excessive force, defending yourself is perfectly legal.

Self defense encompasses a broad range of tactics, including simple strategies to avoid physical altercations, physical moves, the use of nonlethal weapons, and the use of knives and guns. Nearly everyone asked to define the term self defense gives a different answer. Self defense can include the use of non-lethal weapons, but it should be done using appropriate tactics to avoid or mitigate a physical altercation whenever possible. If a confrontation is unavoidable, avoid lethal injuries.

Stun guns and pepper spray make ideal choices for self defense because they are non-lethal, easy to carry, and easy methods to use for those who are not experienced in self defense tactics. Guns and knives make an ineffective choice for self defense by many people because they dont know how to use them correctly and may become too afraid to use it when the time comes. There is also the danger of the attacker using their weapon against them, while this danger is very low with stun guns or pepper spray.

Some people are taught that by fighting back and defending themselves effectively, they are no better than the mugger or attacker. This is simply not the case! Fighting back is a survival strategy that may become necessary if you find yourself in a dangerous situation. The very premise of self defense is that you are not the instigator, you are merely trying to protect yourself.

When you find yourself in a self defense situation, your goal should be to disable your attacker in as quick a manner as possible so that you can get away. Spray them in the eyes with pepper spray or give them a jolt of electricity from your stun gun, and dont wait around to see the results. Both pepper spray and stun guns give you a few minutes to get away after your attacker is disabled. Do not try to continue attacking after your attacker is down. Both methods are non-lethal, and will not cause permanent harm. This can give peace of mind to anyone who is worried about hurting someone who attacks them, even though it is done in self-defense.

If you are attacked, do not worry about getting in trouble for fighting back. You are completely within your rights to physically fight back, or use pepper spray or stun guns, as long as those are legal in your jurisdiction. If someone assaults you or begins attacking you, fight back. Self defense cannot be prosecuted as assault or battery. If you are not being physically attacked, do your best to get away from the situation. You cannot use your pepper spray or stun gun in self defense until you are actually being attacked, but your best course of action is to avoid being attacked in the first place.
